The bandwidth of PCI-E 16 probably won't be filled up soon.

Not the best example, but the principle is still there though - i bought an expensive AGP8X mobo hoping for at least 3 years use, then they brought out PCI-E.

Actually it worked out OK, but only because i developed RSI & had to stop playing games for a year or so.

3.How can future-proofing be a bad idea???

because

a) the formats keep changing - eg. buy an expensive mobo with PCI-E 16, hoping to last 3 years but find next year theyll introduce PCI-E 32 or something, making a bottleneck out of your pricey mobo.

b) the value of electronic components depreciate so quickly, that you have to pay a very large premium to be able to play at max settings - the more expensive a component is, the smaller the performance bonus you get making it relatively poor value (in linear terms).

1.I'll upgrade to a PCI-E 2.0 mobo in early-mid 2008 so that isn't a factor.

2.I'll get the funds to replace them once i can't play games on medium settings anymore.

Help you how, exactly? Give you money, advice, or free computer parts?

a lot of business have a lot of surplus computers. some gift them to schools.

try writting to businesses in your city to ask for an old one. You may score a 2 y.o. laptop with a stuffed battery or something like that. Try legal and accounting firms and any business that has over 100 people, but tell them its to help your studies because you have a disability, AS - so you have to do a lot of study online (or some other story to get some sympathy).

you may not get what you want, but you may get something better than you have.

Listen, money doesn't come easy; you've got to suck it up, save every penny, and most of all get a job. You mentioned (somewhere, I think) you were submiting applications. Well, it's a start, but you have to do more. Call them every day, show up on their doorstep everyday, find out when the manager comes to work, be there before they are with a cup of coffee. Plaster a big S**t eating grin on your face, and jump through whatever hoops they throw at you. It's demeaning and it sucks, but if you really want what you want, it's what you have to do.
