When Was Your Place Built?

Curious on a couple levels: not only to ask when your place was built, but if you have a preference for newer or older houses. I tend toward newer myself (but not brand-new). My apartment dates back to 1972, which is just about on the edge for me. I'll likely move to a 1973-vintage co-op this spring, and while it's nicer than the apartment, it's still missing something compared to the last apartment I had, which was converted from a factory in 1987. Thoughts?

My house (actually my parents' house) was built in 1980 or 1981. I have a preference for newer homes, though.

I would rather have a house built from scratch.

My house was completed being built just last June. And we had a new house before that, too! We like the fact that we can choose whatever we want in the house and not have anything ruined by someone else before we move in.

Our house was built late 60's I think. It's OK, suits our needs. We used to live in an old stone house which had very high ceilings and nice plaster mouldings and cornices, very Victorian, larger than the place we've got now but with the large rooms and high ceilings, it was difficult to keep warm in the winter.

I lurves me old houses. A few years ago I lived in an 130 year old victorian in a historic neighborhood - those are the best houses.

My building was built in 1976. Not am I only living in the 70s. I'm living in a building that was built in the 70s.

1930's

I prefer older houses myself. Mine was built in 1972. It looked like an Austin Powers movie set when we first moved in. The main bathroom had purple paisley wallpaper and a matching shower curtain. I got vertigo just walking in there. One of the bedrooms had orange shag carpet so high you couldn't even close the door. And everything in the kitchen was yellow- the appliances, countertops, even the floor tile!

We've slowly updated everything as time and finances allow so now it looks fairly modern inside. In spite of having to do all that I still prefer older houses because I think they are made better and the lots are bigger. My cousin just bought a new house and it just seems very shoddily built to me. For example, the kitchen cabinets are made from particle board, which distinigrates when it gets wet, instead of real wood. Of course kitchens get wet and one of the cabinets has already had to be replaced. The baseboards in the bathrooms are particle board too, so they shredded immediately too.

My house was built in the 1920's.

I prefer either a good quality brand new house (less to do and a blank canvas), or Victorian with a cellar and an attic room.

I'm not fond of 1970s houses or 1980s. The designs just don't sit well with me.

The building was built in 1979, and went condo in 2000 (which is when I bought my suite).

1927.

The main part of my house is 500 years old, with a 300-year old extension on the front, and a modern extension on the side.

It's a great house with a lot of history (apparently it's the most haunted house in the village), but it's bloody freezing in the winter, because it only has single-glazed windows (because it's a listed building, double-glazing is a no-no, sadly).

1976.

My place was built this past October, and I moved into it in February.

It's a very nice place. There are some little things I don't like about it, but all in all I do like my place. It makes me feel right at home!
