Yes I know a lot of you are big fans of anime but I really don't like it. I think the style of art is lame and the animation on the shows is terrible. Not attacking it, I just was wondering if anyone else doesn't like anime or understand why so many poeple do like it. I did watch a few minutes of one anime full length movie and I thought it was really well made, if other anime was like that maybe I would like it.

I think it grows on you.
I felt that way about it at first, too. My daughter insists I watch it with her occasionally, and I was like, ho-hum.
But, there is a depth and seriousness to anime that is hard to find in other film and media for adolescents. Some of the themes deal with important social issues and thoroughly explored. The simplicity of the drawing (and the similarity in theme) seems to me to be reflective of the culture in which it is made. Our cartoons here in the US are far busier because it is also a reflection of our culture.

Just my humble opinion. My daughter really relates to it, and to me, I'd rather she watch that than Scary Movie or American Pie any day.

No, I don't like it and I have no idea why. I've always had the feeling that I must be missing something about it, it's too 'cutsey' for me, I think, but perhaps that's the point?

My grandson sits and watches japanese cartoon shows like they're something special. I look at them and just go 'meh'.

Was the anime movie you watched from Hayao Myazaki?(sp) That studio is really the best.

I don't like it because of the exaggerations.

I find humor in the subtle. I don't need to be spoonfed with the point of a joke.

Ine xaggerations I also mean the stupid symbols, extreme facial expressions etc the characters use to express emotions.
Perhaps thats why so many aspies here love it? because its easy to read?
Just a theory.

I think the whole thing about big eyes in anime is the japanese embarassment of having to small eyes. I know I'm probably crossing the line here, but I just felt like going a bit psychological about anime...

I find anime is shallow and uninteresting. It is stereotypical and - worst of all - it is invading video games, especially RPGs! I like the good oldschool European style.
I like anime (or manga :?:) only in Street Fighter Alpha 3, but that's a beat 'em up.
And I dont't like not only anime but also those animated characters, like in final fantasy.

I have never watched it... I don't know why, it just never appealed to me, yet I am curious about it since it obviously has something...I love Final Fantasy, but that isn't the same as the characters appearances are more detailed. I did buy one anime....forget it's title but it is one of the better ones...and has the word 'spirit' in the title...hmm, wish I could remember. I never got round to watching it, as I haven't the patience for subtitles on an animation.

There is good anime and bad, just as in any other form of entertainment. I have seen both, and only like the former. Most of what I have seen on TV is of the latter kind. One thing Ai do like about them that I do not often find in western entertainment is the epic-sized, very thought out storylines; in the US if it is long and drawn out, it is a soap opera with little substance to justify it being so long.
But that's just my opinion.

I love anime, but some of it annoys me like Naruto.

I liked Sailor Moon and Pokemon when I was younger. But now I don't get the magic of it.

Too much for me.

Hmmm....

Anime can be an acquired taste, thanks to the different cultural mindset of the Japanese. If you want substance over style, the cliched answer would be Neon Genesis Evangelion, although it's a good one. Some anime are just gratuitious, and are either disturbingly cute, or just plain disturbing. Many anime follow a "monster/power/adversary of the episode" format.

If I had to choose an anime that was fairly realistic, and had very real themes that'd make you think and cry, try Planetes. It's a fairly realistic look at space travel in the 2070's, and when I say realistic, I mean orbital debris, the illnesses astronauts suffer (like cancer), and the political and economic tensions caused by space travel and exploitation.

More complex story lines than American animation. Hell more complex than a lot of american movies too.

I like it that I can't sit their and figure out what the end of a scene is going to be like, half way through it or earlier, compared to most American cookie cutter formula movies.

Some anime is good. Most is crap. Its like anything, its 90% crap. But that 10% good kicks ass!
Watch the first few eps of Elfenlied and tell me u dont like it. Its got everything! Cool-ass-ness, anime-nudity, violence, drama, action, and is very artsy.
Then watch an anime like Chobits, its all cutesy and s**t. I watched it when it first was fan-subbed; i was prob 12-13. I would not watch it now if i never seen it before because it seems like its for little kids on the surface.
