Did you ever find yourself imitating another person not in jest but doing this because you admire how the person handles a particular situation or the massive amount of friends that they have??
I used to do this in the past hoping that I too would have a better grip with the people situation.
Weeeellll...sometimes this can backfire. I was ROYALLY told off by a young, but prominent member of the Neurosurgical staff one day and was told how I reminded him of that HORRIBLE F'N OLD HINDI COW (his superior) who everybody hates but not to her face. After I explained myself, He apologized and said, "Damn, just be yourself!! !" "Anything is better than that crabby, old b**ch.! !" ....and I thought this woman(TOP NEUROSURGEON) was the bomb!! ! Good Lord!! !
I didn't think that doctors talked like this. I was shocked. She was always nice to the R.N.'s. :?
I don't care. I still like her!! 8)

I did sometimes as a kid & it NEVER helped. It only hurt me by causing me to get in trouble with teachers &/or more teased & bullied. I eventually learned it works better for me when I keep to myself as much as I can.

^ If you imitate someone in a very obvious way, people will probably make fun of you for that as imitating may be seen as an indication of insecurity.

I think I might do that subconsciously if I admire someone (even if that person is hated by everyone).

I agree that it's best to be yourself but if you can learn something from someone else maybe you could "imitate" that person.

OP, good on you for still liking that woman even if "everyone hates" her. It's possible that everyone is the b***h.
