I've never actually watched that show, but celebrating a stereotypical Sam-Spade-type detective is better than celebrating some explorer who didn't really discover North America, was beaten to it by Vikings at least 400 years before, and was a greedy, racist murderer who enslaved and killed natives after they helped him.
You may be interested in celebrating "Dead Columbus Day" on May 20th. On this day, we build papier-mâché piñatas that resemble the head of Christopher Columbus, fill them with chocolates, then blindfold the children, arm them with Louisville Sluggers, and encourage them to bash the Genoese explorer's face in. For safety purposes, I recommend only letting one child play at a time. Enjoy!
