That you go into a store and ask an employee if they have the item and they say yes and they go to get it and they come back to you and they say sorry it turns out that we don't have the item that your looking for! Then what do you do when that happens?

Yes.

Then I simply move on to the next store.

Yes, that has happened to me. Especially at video game stores.

I just leave and look elsewhere.

Find out if there are similar items that could work instead, like if its something there are different styles of and they don't have that exact style then maybe there is something else I would settle for....if not I'd just go to another store or look online and order it. Or if its something specifically at that store I might find out if they'll be getting more of that item or maybe consider ordering through store site or whatever.

Yes, it's happened and when it does, I leave, trying to find it elsewhere or online.

Yes, I think it happens quite commonly. If they usually have that particular product in the store, it's reasonable for the employee to say yes and then find out it's all sold out.

I usually go to another shop. If it's cheaper in that particular store and they are getting a new supply of that product soon, I will wait unless I urgently need it.

Some of them don't actually check for you because they don't have enough time (or might not actually know where to look), so they'll take the elevator to the stock room, but come straight back.

No, I never ask employees if an item is in stock, I just look for myself.

^same here. irrationally, i am often terrified to ask employees for anything.

some may not want to order online and prefer to pay in person, with cash so my purchase history cannot be traced, compared to having targeted ads pop up all over the place.

i would rather hand-pick my item and carry it close to me than trust some shipping company. not that i've ever had problems with online shopping though.
