I mean the South of the United States. I like the South a lot better than the North. I have nothing against Northerners. The North, though to me just seems so depressing. The Large Northeastern cities are so dreary . People just aren't warm and friendly up North like they are in the South. I love the music,, food, and culture of Dixie. Its so inspiring. And the South has this vibe to it that is more intriguing- an aesthetic that I really love. When I hear a fellow Southerner talk also it feels like home to me. Its just that friendly way. I love the landscapes too. Its odd that people have this perception about the South as negative. To me, its definitely the nicer part of the country.

BTW, the South is the 11 former states of the Confederacy. No to KY, Missouri, MD, West VA, OKlahoma,- those are border states.

I agree the South is an awesome place. When I see the huge battleflag of Dixie in Tampa I think of a land that isn't the US but another country with it's own regional cultural variations that I'm proud to be born and living in.
Sadly much outside perception of the South comes from shows like Honey Boo Boo, and the predictable racist stereotyped character that's plopped into shows and movies because they didn't want to take time to develop an actual character or spend money on making a non-reality show.

Kentucky, West Virginia are often included in the South and sometimes Oklahoma and Missouri are as well. For some unknown reason the yankee states of Maryland and Delaware along with D.C are tossed into the South by some like the US census (the Mason Dixon line is more of a colonial era north-south divide and not the present one of the Potomac and Ohio).

My grandma lives in the South, but I have no intention of visiting the South any time soon. I don't think I would fit in any Southern culture.

I don't hear too much about Missouri being considered "Southern"--though Oklahoma fills the bill, I believe.

I think southern West Virginia--like around Bluefield--is Southern. I don't think Wheeling, West Virginia is Southern, though.

I find many people in Maryland, Delaware, and DC have "Southern" accents.

I think the South, frequently, is a nice and welcoming place.

Ummm..... I've never heard Maryland referred to as a "Yankee State"----nor Delaware, for that matter. Maryland has always been referred to as south of the Mason Dixon line----so, to me, it's not a colonial thing, it's a present-day thing. I don't understand why any agency, or whatever, would think that the Potomac River or Ohio River would divide the North from the South when the Potomac runs south through Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia (the eastern part), etc., and the Ohio River runs westward from Pennsylvania through Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio----and one other one, I can't think-of, right now.

There's been HUGE migration to here, from the South, for as far back, at least, to the 40s; so, all those people brought their "Southern Ways" with them. Maryland is VERY "country" ("South-ish") from Cumberland, westward. There's MAJOR farms / farming, here----dairy, wheat, corn, and soybean, to name a few; it's "horse country" (we're the second jewel in "The Triple Crown"), and a whole bunch of other South-like stuff. Also, there's major farms all toward the Eastern Shore----Perdue Chickens is on the Eastern Shore (not that I'm proud of that).

Delaware is practically ALL farmland. There's a couple of tourist traps, but no, really, MAJOR metropolitan area except for Dover, and I don't mean to be rude, but Dover is sort of a joke compared to Baltimore----as in, Dover's "metropolitan-ness".

Also, at least half the people here have a southern accent (myself, included)----not a "deep-South" accent, but.....

Isn't Wilmington, DE a relatively big city? I think its population is about 75,000 in the city itself.

Not large as compared to Baltimore, DC, or NYC (where I'm from)

But it DOES have a skyline.

I made a double post by accident....sorry about that. They won't let me delete it.

Oops, you're right----I forgot about dear ol' Wilmington!! ! Yeah, it has a skyline----tons of chemical businesses----but, you're also right in that it's not as large as Baltimore. Baltimore has nearly 10X the population (that's down in the city, itself). It's the largest independent city in the whole United States.

It would be cute if you had a Bawlimore accent LOL. I once went to a diner in Glen Burnie--and I heard the accent!

Yeah, that accent's pretty interesting, actually. For one thing, they pronounce "oi" as "aw". People who have a Bawlmer accent are fairly few and far between----except in certain neighborhoods where EVERYBODY speaks that way. I always like to hear someone speak that way, cuz I sorta think of it as an ethnicity, and that the person has been-around a lonnnnnng time----and, DEFINITELY born and raised here!

my l.o, lived in arkansas for an undisclosed amount of time before she moved here. her drawl was well hidden but it surfaced occasionally when we were together. whether it was "intentional" i'd never know.

as for me, the only south i've ever personally known, was south of the border. no relatives or friends over in dixie, not even transitionally.

Your post OP reminds me of the old proverb. The grass is always greener on the other side. Don't get me wrong southern people do tend to start friendly conversations when passing by other strangers more often. Something Northerners aren't know for doing a whole lot, but living in the south isn't ideal. For starters the topic of homosexuality is considered bad by many southerns. Granted not all of them, but a good majority still consider it immoral. When asked why most will say because it infringes on the sanctity of marriage, and the bible says it is wrong. Which in hindsight is hilarious because the south has the highest rate of divorce in the country.
Divorce Rates in U.S. So much for the sanctity of marriage.
Not to mention Public health is worse in the South than the North. Obesity is a big problem * no pun intended * Which once again the South leads the nation in obesity. * which is not something to be proud of *
Obesity Map of U.S. Sure the south has friendly people, but there are a lot of problems behind it.

Yep, that's totally true!! I don't have a problem with it because there's several gay people in my family. Almost all of my gay relatives are in the South, and I have a sister who's a "holy-roller" (also in the South), but she hasn't said anything about my other sister's son..... YET!!

It's all that friggin' fried food----and biscuits, cornbread, and PIES!! ! LOL I don't even like biscuits, cornbread, and pies----and I almost never eat fried food cuz I know how bad it is, for ya----and one of my sisters thinks I'm NUTS!! ! She told me I must relinquish my "Hillbilly Identification Card", at ONCE!! ! LOL j/k

Yep, we're SUPER friendly----we'll talk your leg, off----but, we'll fix ya a mighty fine meal!! ! Come on down and set a spell!! ! We'd love t'have ya!! !
