I live in an over crowded city with palms and banana trees. We have a zillion feral cats jumping from garbage cans and running all over the yards and streets. short walking distance from my house are busy streets with many stores and restaurants very close together. many bus stops within walking distance from my house. no squirrels, and almost never mice and rats. the feral cats ate them all.

can you describe the area surrounding your house? this is interesting.

I live in a residential suburb. There is a Woolworth in 10 mins' walk. There is a small park nearby. Many trees and grassed areas around. No feral cats, feral dogs, squirrels, kangaroos, mice or rats around as far as I know. There's a train station nearby that I use daily.

EDIT: there are also Subway (rotten carrot pieces in the sandwich), Spud Shed, KFC, MacDonald, Dôme cafe etc near Woolworth.

i had no idea subway uses carrot pieces in sandwiches nowadays. i love carrot in the sandwich, but not rotten! the other restaurant sound very inviting. park, trees, grassed area - very nice. no animals - shame.

I live in the country. You have to have a car to get anywhere. There are rednecks with big pick up trucks. Lots of trees and animals. My neighbor's rooster wakes me up on weekends and once i was late to work because goats wouldn't get out of the road. There are lots of hills and it is very green. We get a few tornadoes every spring and fall. Everyone has guns and hunts, but me. Most people are friendly here. It's pretty now because the leaves are changing colors. Their are all sorts of dwellings from condos to trailers.

Well there are houses as its in a neighborhood, there is property with horses across from my house and a graveyard close by, I live rather close to a somewhat busy street. Pretty much the area is gas stations, places to eat, a couple grocery stores, head shops, liquor stores, pawn shops, and bars, I think this particular street has been mentioned on south park probably. Anyways there are also parks and various spots of sort of open space sort of areas within walking distance. And I live fairly close to Denver but its far enough to where I have to take the bus to get there.

I ve on the very outskirts of a town with a population of around 10,000. We are about 40 miles away from town of around 220,000. The main drag is about 4 miles long with 6 stoplights. Main street is about 1.5 miles with 3 stoplights. Walmart is 3.2 miles from my door. A Kroger store is 300 yards from my door. I go outside at 3am and have complete silence and stillness for 10-20 minutes at a time before I may hear a car or train. There is an Arbys, a KFC, McDonalds and a Wendys within a half mile that I might enter one of them once a month. My 24 hour gym is a 30 second walk. Other than car burglaries and domestic crap this town is virtually crime free. There are only two bars other than the bars in the VFW, American Legion, and the Eagles. I seldom go outside during daylight other than to go to the VA to see my Dr.s maybe 7 times a year. I love it here, but I don't drink so I don't need what other people call "excitement."

There are a lot of cornfields, a walmart, three churches and two bars, and a catholic college. Welcome to the midwest.

Two block long dead-end street.

Bus stop three blocks away.

Two buses to work, graveyard shift.

No sidewalks on my street.

town size of 85,000. i live on the "east" side of one of the core streets of town that form the "grid". half a block away is what i presume to be the second busiest threet in town, a wide 14 block long avenue straddling a part of town with a significant hispanic population. (us included).
my house was built in the 1920s i think, some areas that have not been spruced up in the 12 years i've lived here show significant wear and tear. in fact, we are getting money and authorization for a new roof soon! (rent)

not that i see much reason for it, there are a few leaks apparent when it rains, but when does i really rain around these parts??

we live on a bit of a hill, i enjoyed zooming down it all the way down to (what is now) Big Brand Tire as a kid on a scooter an feeling like such a rebel for going so far. wow! even now i have to switch gears on my bike as i ascend or it makes strange jolting noises. my junior high i previously attended is right across the street, so it was a nice little commute. if only they had let us off campus for lunch back then...

there is a market across the street and around the corner, and a pizza place only a little farther. a bus stop, expensive mexican restaurant and a little store only a block away.
my immediate neighbors to the north are probably 20 people jam packed into one house, one of the kids just started to take violin lessons...oh boy

out in the middle of a rural county. live walking distance from two lakes of moderate size. surrounded by water, actually, with a swamp behind my tin can in the woods. luckily live in a high-spot so the flooding [recent deluge] is occurring in the valley down below me. there is a general store down a long hill about 3 miles away from me. it contains overpriced convenience items like mouse traps and snack foods, etc. and sells gas as well. another 6 miles away is an elementary school, all uphill from the general store. 10 minute drive so far. then down a steep winding hill is the highway going north/south through the county, I get on it for another half-hour before I reach the county seat [population under 10,000 but spread out] which is a two-main-drag affair, north/south/east/west. up hill is where the local wallyworld is at [the only game in town] where I grocery shop once per week. there is one movie house and several bars/taverns, two pizza places [dominos and pizza hut], one elhi school up to grade 8 and a high school. if I ever again attend my aspie meetups [laid up with back ails] I have to drive another 20 minutes into the state capital where it is held at the city college. anyways, back closer to home, it is mostly trees and wild critters and yahoos. I hear gunfire on a regular basis. poachers are out in the woods doing their thing. also target practicers shooting at stuff. I go out there once in a blue moon and see shot up junked cars and bottles and cans and such, with spent shotgun shells and .22 casings here and there. not much haute culture out here but it suits my speed.

To the north, a university campus and a road full of parties, bars and restaurants
To the east, the city centre
To the south, a free school and a small urban area
To the west, two supermarket superstores

One can only imagine how crazy it can get 8O

I live about 10 miles from Central Manchester.

The houses in my street are terraced, and date from the very early 1900s.

The neighbourhood is pretty quiet, and the town itself is a bit run-down. In the 1950s there were about twenty cotton mills in full production within a mile or so of here, but the last one closed in the 1980s.

Transport into the city is privately run, expensive and not wholly satisfactory.

I previously lived in London and Oxford, and this place is a bit of a come-down. Not sure I'll ever adjust to it.
