Why do cats love catnips so much?

I bought some catnip tea from a health food store. The fragrance reminds me of both green tea and camomile tea...I like it... The only thing is my cats go crazy over it...They would find every chance to attack my teacup...So, when I'm having a cup of catnip tea, I always sprinkle some catnip I bought from the pet store on their cushions to distract them...

It's a lovely sight to observe a cat go crazy over catnip... but I wonder why they get so attracted to it...

good topic, I have two cats and one of them goes completely ballistic over the stuff and the other one could care less. Go figure.

My cats love it, but they seem to love cat grass even better. They chew on it to help with hairballs and love to roll in the stuff. They are turned on, it seems, by all the plants in the house.

I plant a big patch every year for the "neighborhood kitties"...and also for mine...then I dry what's left of it in the fall.

I've become the local "connection" of sorts.

Neighbor's kitty enjoying an afternoon roll in the catnip...

It's fun to watch. :lol:

It seems to calm my cat down, when she gets all crazy i give her some and she gets all mellowed out.

We've never given catnip to our cats, as far as I know.

Giving it to our one remaining cat would be... interesting, considering she's almost completely deaf, virtually blind and really not with it at the best of times.

my cat used to hate catnip but i guess he was the same cat that drank dirty water from the sink,bath and drain and never drank clean water, and used to climb into my school bag in the morning.
