So I came home from work today and my cat had something hanging out of his butthole. It was like a piece of wrapper only cloth-like not plastic, around six inches long. This is the weird part, only three inches of it was inside, and three was hanging outside. I can't figure out how he got it up there. The part hanging out was totally clean, the part inside was of course covered with poop. He does eat stuff when I'm not looking, but I can't imagine how he could have gotten something 6 inches long through his system without harm, plus how would the outside part be so clean?

Anybody have any ideas what could have happened?

Hi, qualified veterinary nurse here, you can't gross me out. ;)

I've seen some pretty incredible things come out of cats (and dogs), and I've also seen some things get stuck inside and have to be surgically removed. I'm pretty sure that it must have gone through him (unless he somehow managed to sit on something and get it in that way??), although how it looked clean after coming out of his butt, I can't imagine. Is it out completely now?

Please keep a close eye on him. Check his colour (lift his lip and look at his gums to make sure they are a nice healthy pink colour). Make sure he is eating and pooping ok, even if you have to keep him inside or follow him around outside for a bit.

If he shows any sign of lethargy, not wanting to eat, not being able to go to the toilet, or straining while trying, please get him to a vet as there may be something still stuck inside.

Let us know how he gets on. :)

He seems ok, he ate dinner and yes, as far as I can tell it's all out. But thanks for the advice, I'll watch him.

Yeah the whole thing is weird, the part inside was coated thickly and the part outside had nothing at all on it. I don't see how he could have sat on it and caused it to go in, but I don't see how the other part could be clean, but it was dry and fluffy like it hadn't even gotten wet. Totally crazy.

I'm not even sure how he could have swallowed something that big. Will I ever know the answer? Maybe not.

The only thing I can think of, gross as it sounds, is that he 'groomed' the part that was sticking out. That is the only way I can account for it being that clean. Have you identified what it actually was?? That may help solve the mystery of how it got in.

We once had an unrecognizable object stuck inside a cat. It took a long time to work it out, but it turned out to be glad wrap (cling film) that had solidified. Our best guess was that it had been used to wrap meat so it tasted good to the cat, but instead of just licking it he ate the whole thing. It had to be surgically removed. Then again, we've heard of cats and dogs eating strange things like fabric (socks etc). No one seems to know why, it could be some kind of vitamin / mineral deficiency, or just a weird liking for the texture and a strange behavioural issue.

As you say though, it's a mystery you may have to live with. Some of these things never get solved. As long as he's doing fine, that's the main thing. :)

It's a mystery for the ages. He's sitting on me right now. I'm pretty sure he's ok. Weird!
Thanks again for the advice.
