Are there chat rooms on the internet now?

I used to be on aol and there were chat rooms there. I know that Yahoo used to have them too. I can't find anything now that isn't just for hooking up. No regular chats anywhere. I don't have aol anymore so that's not an option, but where are chat rooms that I can use without downloading something onto my daughters laptop and that aren't for hooking up? I just want to chat about boring stuff.
