In your opinion, are the 2010's (this decade)better or worse than the 2000's (last decade) or other decades. Please explain why this decade is better or worse than the last or any other decade.

Sometimes I think the entire planet is going to the hounds, and other times I think maybe not because I've read about different points in history and how they didn't have it so great but movies and TV tend to make it look better that it actually was. Like people used to drink alcohol mainly because plain water could kill you, and people can say what they want about drinking tap water but the fact that it's been treated is the reason we haven't all died of cholera a long time ago. A couple weeks ago I saw a video about the old asylums. Those places were truly what inspire survival-horror video games. People were treated like animals, being forced to sit in their own bodily waste while naked and the people "caring" for them were often just as unstable if not more so. And it didn't take much to be committed, but you were lucky if you didn't die there and be buried in an unmarked grave.

Actually there was a mental hospital not that many years ago near the city I live in. It was built probably in the 40's or 50s and I heard there used to be bars on the windows and that there are even unmarked graves of people who were buried somewhere near it . I used to go there for appointments and do occupational therapy, but it wasn't the horror-house it used to be. They tore it down years ago. I wasn't really happy then because I had just finished hand-painting a mural there. :(

it seems things are definitely coming to a head, what with "wars and rumors of wars" going on, the sheer level of divisiveness in the world today.

Things switch and change about, but a few concerns strike as pronounced in the 10's

1) Censoriousness. The very British political leaders that cheer along Charlie Hebdo cartoons censor the same thing off the internet that targets them. Freedoms of Speech and Association have been written off in Britain.

2) Going back to the future. A quip in Britain is that our Social Policy is going back to the 30's, the 1730's.

3) International tensions. One right wing historian I read drew parallels with the situation in Syria and The Thirty Years War.

Dentistry is better, cars as transport (rather than style statements) are better, but a sense of Community is shot to pieces and there's no one around like Little Richard.

Very good replies. Everyone seems to have an opinion on why or why not this decade is better.

I think things are worse than they were last decade in the realm of gender politics. There are too many gender specific toys in toy stores these days. What's wrong with a girl playing with a green toy machine gun, or a black bow and arrow set? Why does everything for girls have to be pink, purple and aqua?

I think that there are too many wars being fought in the world, today. There are three times as many wars going on today, as there 10 years ago.

Things have gotten both better and worse in the realm of music. Pop music and Top 40 are still getting worse with each passing year. On a more positive note, music fans are no longer scorned upon if The Beatles aren't their favourite band.

Groups like ISIS will be one of the first things that will come to people's minds when they think of the new '10s
