So, I'm making a big crossover thing that's supposed to bring together a bunch of creators on Tumblr, and it's going to have fan characters and original characters in it. The question is, do I put it on fanfiction.net or FictionPress? The story itself isn't based on an existing work but it has fan characters based on many, many existing works in it.

If it has any fan characters its goes in fan fiction unless all the fan characters are out copyright and in the public domain this usually means the characters pre date the 1920's but there are exceptions.
Sherlock homes is out of copyright unless you write about Sherlock homes as an old man those stories are still in copyright.
Deeply consider doing only out of copyright characters if you want to republish the story in print.
