I wonder why the flags of Italy and Hungary are so similar. They can be easily confused.

You're right, they are very similar. I've just thought of a way to remember which one is which:

On Hungary's flag, the stripes are horizontal. The word "horizontal" begins with H.
On Italy's flag, the stripes are vertical, shaped like the letter I.

How ingenious - what a clever bunny you are! :D

Also, the cross bar on the capital letter H is horizontal, which is another aide memoire.

Flags of Luxembourg (light blue) and Holland side by side, at the monument of Wilhelm II.

Wow, they are almost identical 8O

Luxembourg's flag's colours are lighter than Holland's. The word "lighter" begins with L :D

A lot of national flags are similar and easily confused. For instance, the colours blue, white and red are very common, often in a tricolour format. It would be interesting to know how many flags are made up of these three colours ... any data-heads out there willing to take this on?

Are you interested in flags? I have a handkerchief that shows all the British naval signal flags and what they mean.

Me too! If you're interested I'll try and scan my handkerchief (don't worry, it's perfectly clean! ) and show it to you. Although I expect there are charts of British Navy flags published already, probably somewhere like Wikipedia.
