We have three cats. One indoor/outdoor cat, one older cat we got from my mother when she died who is indoor only because she is completely declawed, and we recently got a new siamese kitten (I say he's male but my daughter thinks he's female, we will see) for the full blood husky we got who was a stray around Christmas. He's really catlike and is bullied by our two wolf husky hybrids so they don't play with him and he tried to play with our cats but they hate on him so we got a kitten for him and now those two are like a Disney movie. They play and sleep together, etc. His old owner who we contacted and found via the chip he has in him said he was raised with cats, and a show dog, so cats are his thing. (They had given him away when they moved but I guess the guy they gave him to didn't take care of him and nobody can find him, so the dog is ours now). Anyway, the indoor outdoor cat is pregnant. I had told my daughter to get her fixed since she decided to bring her inside the house sometimes and make her an indoor/outdoor instead of just an outdoor cat, but she didn't. Kittens go fast when you put an ad for them in the Mule Trader. People in the country are always needing cats, so they won't be put to sleep or anything. However, it's going to be like pulling teeth to get those kittens away from my two girls who will want to keep them.

Kittens. Great. The last time this cat had kittens she had them early and ate them. I'm still not over that yet.

Anybody in Alabama want a kitten? LOL

Yep. She ate them. I came in and caught here. Right after they were born. They were too early to live anyway but that was extremely gross and I had to clean that up. I didn't want her back in the house after that for a while. I still think of her as the "cannibal cat".

Its an instinct thing they do....if they have still births or their too early to survive its normal for them to eat them. Of course that does not make it any less disturbing to witness.

I read the topic title and heard it in Indiana Jones's voice.

I heard dogs and cats eat their young sometimes. One guy told me a few years ago that a mother dog ate her own puppies and all found he found left of them was their little heads. 8O

Even if there's a justifiable reason for why they do this I could never look at that cat or dog the same again.
BTW, has anyone heard of something called spaying?

I told them to get her fixed when they took the new dog in for shots, but they didn't. I honestly didn't give much thought to it after that. We need to get her fixed after these kittens, even though she's mainly an outside cat.

I also kind of hold a grudge against her for eating them. I still see her as the "cannibal cat" and don't like to hold her. It's just squicky to me lol.

Here's a strange and somewhat related fact. My midwife told me once that she's been to a couple of births where the mom asked her to cook the placenta for her afterwards. There is a small and not very popular trend toward eating your placenta after you have a baby. I wouldn't do it. I saved mine and had my husband bury it under a big, old tree which is what you are supposed to do, (I couldn't get it with the first baby - he was born in the hospital but the others were born at home) but I don't think I could ever eat it.

On a side note, after I had my third baby we put the placenta in a bag in the freezer so my husband could go bury it. It was raining the day after the birth so he couldn't. We had forgotten about it until my MIL came to visit and I saw it thawing on the counter. She thought it was liver and was going to cook it. I hate my MIL and if I had known she wouldn't have forced my kids to eat it too, I would have let her do it. Then I would have told her afterwards. I'm kind of a s**t sometimes.
