I'm thinking of getting my haircut but I can't decide about just a trim or snip it all off short. Now, it's 3/4 down my back. Took awhile to grow it and I can put it up for work. Cut short I liked too - not as much to dry, color, etc. My question is do you prefer long or short hair and does it depend on the sex of the person or the person's age perhaps? Should people go naturally gray?

Trim! You just might look good in Gray.

Yeah....I believe in "aging gracefully," too. If I were to color my hair sandy (my original hair color), I would look much younger than my 54 years--but I don't.

I dye my hair dark brown or black, so when I have greys growing out they really stand out lol. I've found my hair has gotten coarser with age. I know that sounds silly at 31 but it really has. I can't wear my hair down unless it's straightened. Cutting it all off sounds like the easiest solution but I wouldn't look good with a short style at the moment (perhaps when I've hopefully lost weight and I'm more slender in the face and neck).

I'm 38 so I'm a few years into the future for you. Face-wise, aspies and auties usually age better than NTs. Why? We make too many expressions so we wrinkle more. That won't help your hair though.

Yes, I think the hair getting coarser with age is common. Mine has too. Mine is going white instead of gray. It got darker and curlier after I had my son, so I finally started going to the salon. The lady that does mine is one of the expensive tier stylists. She lightens my hair just one shade, so it masks the white but I still look like myself. Then she does a conditioning treatment on it and trims it.

My hair is about the same length as the OPs. I'm never happy with it when I cut it even though I probably look the same, so I try to leave it long.

I hate hair cuts so I'm like a sheep. They wait until it gets really shaggy and then get the clippers and buzz it. I don't care what it looks like though.

I'd like to grow my hair longer, but the problem is that it's so thick that it's hard to control when it gets shaggy (it poofs out instead of hanging down, for example). For the time being, I prefer it short.

I did prefer my hair longer, but in the last couple years, it has gotten gray in blotches so there are mixed patches of color and has gotten a lot more frizzy, so i felt i needed to cut it short to keep it in control. But i hate the process of getting it cut.

My hair kinda keeps me some warmth despite it's thinness. I won't have a hair cut, it kinda makes me feel naked. Even with a trim I kinda felt it some of my hair are 'gone'.
I wish my hair could get any more straight so I wouldn't have to comb or tie it often. I was naturally curly after all, I look like a wicked witch with a childish face without a hat because of that. But it's soft and long anyway. I won't mind anyone playing with it as long as there are no cutting objects involved.

Aside from that, my mom occasionally bugs me to have a hair cut, hair color dying, hair rebonding and other hair treatments and I kept saying 'no'.
Then I see my sister, who is willing to have any of those, glaring at my mom with frustration because she was never asked any of that. Granted because she kept straightening and curling her hair too often, with treatments, it made her hair look dead and dry for like YEARS!! My hair, on the other hand, is almost a virgin hair.
And I'm tempted to wear a wig to hide my hair in public not because of embarrassment, but for pure amusement.

Long, short, natural, dyed etc all look good on different people - so, totally depends on what you look like & how your hair looks on you. Some people look better bald, others with long hair, others short etc.

I haven't done anything drastic with my hair since I was ~19 years old when I last bleached it out blonde and then used smurf blue hair gel in it.. but on Tuesday I'm about to get my fauxhawk bleached and dyed in a full rainbow in preparation for a Pride Party (that I'm hosting as a fundraiser for gay homeless kids: https://www.facebook.com/events/466972076796237/ ) the next day & the parade the following Sunday. (that I'll just be attending to check out, not participating in.)

I'm thinking I'm going to get some interesting reactions to my hair.. especially since I've also been growing a full beard recently - which I'm dedicated to keeping for halloween lol as I plan on going as King Leonidas.

I had to ask my cat. She loves to sniff my half-a-meter long hair which I will cut tomorrow. I just need a haircut. People are staring at me. The cat, she said go on man. You look like the Florida piano player.

I have snow white across the top of my head and nowhere else, and personally I prefer to dye it to the closest shade I always was naturally, because not to toot my own horn but my face hasn't aged enough to match white hair, and I absolutely refuse to sport white hair while the rest of me can still pass for a lot younger.

I have the aspie "looks younger" thing and always have. When I was forty I still looked like a peachy teenager and got carded all the time. At 53 people still say they thought I was about 32 before I told them my age.

I am going to RIDE THAT PONY as long as I can get away with it!! !! !

So I dye my white roots to my original color and I intend to stop only when the rest of me catches up with the grey/white look.

Other than that, I do believe in "aging gracefully" regarding stuff like no plastic surgery. I don't think I will ever want to do that. But I do believe in taking care of what you've got so that you look good as long as possible. There's nothing wrong with that. I take care of my skin and I keep a natural, healthy look. I don't look or act 53 so I'll be damned if I'll let white hair make me look 93. Not ready yet.

I also tend to like long hair, on myself and on others. I think severely short hair doesn't always work on every person. I know it doesn't work on me -- I have one of those faces that look plain with short hair, and very different when framed with hair. My medium long hair has been one of my best features so I will never cut it short; it's about to mid-back/mid upper arm. I don't believe in that old thing about older women shouldn't keep long hair. My grandmother had hair she could sit on in her 70s; I'm not that extreme but I'll keep it long as an old lady if I want to.

I really rail against all these things people want other people to do with their looks (or not do) as they age.
