Idioms and their origins
42 Idioms Explained. Well, at least about 80% of the time. Some get a brief mention. Still, idioms are an interest of mine. Some I hate, others I really love.
Killing two birds with one stone is a fun one for me.
Who's she, the cat's mother? is one I absolutely despise though I'm so tired that I can't work out if that fits here.
How do you feel about certain idioms? Do you hate them all? Do you have any you like to play with? Are there ones which nearly always throw you off even though you know what they mean? Are there any you are proud of working out for yourself or simply happy that you didn't need much explanation?
In a sort of related way, I worked out what Get into the Sea meant after seeing it everywhere. My allistic friends were just saying it was the newest way to say somebody is an idiot but I work out why it is appropriate. I managed that from a brief look at one or two descriptions of the meaning which didn't quite say it:
"He wants to raise taxes for elderly people which will mean they can't heat their homes in the winter? Into the sea with him. - A politician wants to take money from vulnerable people, meaning some may die. This politician is either entirely disconnected from reality or is cruel. So! He should de-evolve, grow fins, and wiggle his fishy butt back into the sea.
I'm not sure if the meme creator meant it like that but the way it is used - and I see it a lot in examples such as the above - would seem to make sense. Even if somebody dislikes another, they are stating the "idiot" in question should not be in the gene pool and head on back down the evolutionary pathways. I quite like it now that I have at least a personal understanding, although a few allistic person gave me FB likes for it.
Anyway! I know some will hate this post and others will like to play around with words or vent, etc. So I'll leave you to it and come back later.
