Why do you have to work for free before you can work for money? This doesn't make sense.
Internships should be paid, nobody should be forced to work for free.

Don’t expect anyone to pay you for what they can get for free.

The only reason is a pitiful lack of respect on the part of employers. Being self-trained is a grind, so those who aren't look for people to 'train'.
