I say pen like it rhymes with ten and pin like it rhymes with thin. Is how you say it really such a big deal?
I guess it could get a little confusing, such as asking to borrow someone's "pin" so you can write a note. :)

I used to have the pin-pen merger, but once I found out that the two words are supposed to sound different, I worked really hard on hearing the difference and saying pen the right way. Before, I would pronounce pen the same way as pin, hen as hin, ten as tin, Ben as bin, etc. It seemed really strange at first, like I was dragging the words out, but I quickly got used to it. It seems like some people in my area have the merger and others don't.

 This.

Mind you, we don't all pronounce them the same.
The way I talk, I tend to say pen in an Aussie accent, but I say pin a bit like "pun" – which is more of a Kiwi pronunciation.

When I was a kid I had a problem pronouncing the E & I sounds differently but I don't nowadays & thus pronounce those words differently.
