For those not familiar with me or who I am: I absolutely HATE posting anything about negative news events. Our media today in this country (at least in North AMerica) blows these things out of proportion (with their theory, 'If it bleeds, it leads') and dwelling on such events is NOT good for one's mental or physical health. It is sad that this nation's media tends focus on those things constantly. That, and bad mental health leads to stuff like this. I don't want to talk or hear about these events again, it's not good for me, mentally in any way.

So, remember, it's not out of heartlessness, but rather that talking about anything negative doesn't bring good vibes from me, and I dislike that. Do me a favor, and don't bring up these negative events in our conversations with me, please? Thank you.

With that said, I will end this comment on a positive note from Conan O'Brien: “All I ask is one thing, and I’m asking this particularly of young people: please don’t be cynical. I hate cynicism, for the record, it’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.” So, who's with me? Who wants to make amazing happen with me?

I agree with you
the problem is, neither of us are content providers, producers, media consultants, advertising executives or board of directors

What we are is the viewing public
and the only option we have
is to turn off

Morbid curiosity. Death sells. I think it's an evolutionary psychological trait that we focus on these things, either as a warning, or because it is interesting and different. Not many newspapers would sell, unfortunately, if the headline proclaimed "EVERYTHING IS FINE" every day.

For a while, I filtered news on an RSS feed, and that's where I got all my information from, but with the ubiquity of negative media, it's difficult to maintain a wholly positive news stream. I think we need some knowledge of the negative to appreciate the positive. However, I think a lot of news companies split their "journalism" in to two categories: serious, and fluff.

My main issue is that the mainstream media (yes, I know that using that phrase makes me sound a certain way) dictates what the public should care about. I don't know whether non-Britons are aware, but after recent "terrorist" events, 1- and 2-minute silences were held nationally for the Britons lost, but there is no recognition of other atrocities.

But I do not think it is necessary to repeatedly and constantly show certain images/themes on all media outlets. For a long time I've watched the news waiting for them to say the phrase "...and now the murders", because it is there, but they don't call it that.

Going to bring this up again. Do not mention any such events here, it's not good for me, as I said initially.

while I wouldn't presume to tell you how to live your life, I've personally developed a different method for cynicism.
By expecting bad things I'm either prepared for them or I'm pleasantly surprised. But the real effort is facing the lost causes. There are certain norms of society which I think we could do with less of such as swearing and sarcasm (just a couple examples). However, the odds of making that change are strongly against. That won't stop me from doing my part. I can hope that I inspire enough other people so that eventually (generations from now) things will be better

I just left another forum because of the constant cynicism, negativity, pessimism, complaining, and bickering. It gets tiring real quick. I also avoid certain sub-forums here for the same reason (News and PPR are toxic) and I try to avoid the comment sections on most websites, particularly YouTube. I can only take so much.

But that is a very, very negative event...so why is that a reason to bump a thread where you don't want anything negative posted about?

For exactly that reason!

To remind folks not to talk (atleast not to him) about it.

Exactly! Please read the first post of this article to understand why I don't want to talk about such things.

I will add this: I absolutely REFUSE to give in to fear.... I don't want to dwell on such things. It's against my ethos.

Well if they are going to hang around in the news & current events section, or politics and philosophy forum they are going to see stuff about negative stuff...so I advise they avoid those sections of the forum.

I did, hence why I was confused as to why you wanted to bring up such a terrible event in your own anti-negativity thread...especially if you don't want to talk about it. Also I don't think being aware and discussing things is necessarily dwelling but to each their own.

^ Well, given that I asked people read the first post I made in this thread, however, I hope you now understand things. And I don't mean to be demeaning here, bear in mind.

I've recently stopped posting in PPR after giving it a try. I wanted to try something new on WP and it didn't work out for me. I'm only posting mainly in General, Random and Members Only for the time being.

PPR gets pretty repetitive.
