Shadenfreude - pleasure taken from someone else's misfortune

(i have this one in my head since I saw AvenueQ last week)

edit: Oooops ... not an english word .... how about Epicaricacy
(which is the english equivalent of Shadenfreude ... but I still prefer shadenfreude)

Schadenfreude..is pronounced...Shad n froi de..
Shad--('a'..like in father)

A fictional term coined by fantasy-comedy author Terry Pratchet. 'Knurd' is at the other end of a spectrum at which the state of 'drunkeness' is at the other end. It is not, in fact, sobriety. Sobriety is in the middle of this spectrum, where the person has all his mental defences against the world as it really is up. Knurd is a sort of super-sobriety that usually makes people not to end up like it again (and thus will usually avoid Klatchian coffee in future). It's the state where they see the world as it really is. One Discworld character, Samuel Vimes, is thought to be naturally midly knurd, and actually needs a few drinks to actually be sober...
