I would not dream of going shopping on black friday.
I hate crowds and that's what it is to the max.
I hate long slow lines at the checkout, too.
Whatever savings benefit there is will be more than negated by the sheer frustration and annoyance.

My Christmas shopping is kept quick and simple.
For the very few people I exchange with they have to send me an e-mail with exactly what they want by manufacturer and model number and preferably where to get it. I reciprocate in kind for them. I check availability online so when I go get it it's a simple grab it, pay for it, and be GONE. There is no guessing and milling around malls and stores for hours wondering what would be a good thing to get someone. No one is ever butthurt that they didn't get what they want, either.

They have this nonsense here in Canada now. My bus on the way home had to be rerouted due to too many shoppers crossing the street. So, on my walk to the train I stopped and bought a couple gifts. It was busy, but no long checkout lines and no "walmart youtube video" behaviour. It was just a really busy shopping day. I can't imagine participating in it "American style," though.. ever. F that crazy crap.

More people are shopping online now. The crowds are smaller these days.

I refuse to shop on "Black Friday" or any similar days. Way too many people there for me.
I have no problem shopping online, though.

I do. It seems so silly how some of those Black Friday shoppers resort to barbaric behavior over materialistic items.

I agree dobyfm it's completely absurd to see how people behave all due to materialistic constructs.

I was delighted to hear most retailers reported lower turnouts than anticipated. I agree Cyber Monday has helped contribute to the tapering of in-store shoppers.
FWIW, yesterday my spouse went out and was able to find the same "sold out" deep fryer for the same price it was advertised for on Thanksgiving nite/black Friday, with a much smaller crowd in the store being three days later. I believe what happens is that a lot of B.F. hoarders realise they spent too much and have no money left for necessities like groceries, so they end up having to take things back for refunds. The stores obviously put those items back out for sale.

My mother told me today that if I don't like Black Friday then just ignore it or not shop on that day. It *should" be that easy, shouldn't it? :?

Same here. I bought a router on Amazon on Black Friday for 40% off.

Does anyone think the term "Black Friday" is offensive to African Americans?

No, because it isn't in reference to African Americans.. it's about corporations selling enough product to be "in the black" vs. operating "in the red" all year up until that point.

Today at work the funniest thing we came up with while talking about the craziness of Black Friday was that it would be absolutely hilarious for an MMA gym to run a New Year's ad campaign (you know, how all gyms target new years resolution'ers to sign up) to get people to start their training now for next year's Black Friday! Did you miss out on that last $10 toaster oven? Did a kid beat you to it? Start your training for next year's Black Friday NOW!!

I don't even wanna go near a store during Black Friday. The last thing I want is to get trampled, so no going out there for Spooky. Thank god or whatever you believe in for online shopping!

I see on TV that most consumer analysts believe the best deals in the big box stores are still to come, probally starting about 2 weeks to XMAS. I bet a lot of B.F. shoppers will be kicking themselves in the @$$ for shopping early.

I've never owned a proper suit & still don't currently have a need for one.. but g'damn I kinda wish I did - indochino, a local custom suit store where you order in store or online & they have your suit made overseas and then ship it, has their premium $749 suits on sale today for Cyber Monday at 50% off, so $375cdn.

It'll be at least another year before I need a suit I figure, so I'll keep that in mind for this time next year. If I'm at a point in work/career plans where I'll be needing one, well, a custom tailored suit (or two) for that price might just be in order..
