Do you mean like sensormatic / rfid tags?

I'm fascinated with almost anything related to security.

I once worked at a company that analyzed financial fraud patterns and developed algorithms to automatically detect them. As time went by we kept lowering the threshold for the number of pieces of data we needed to detect fraudulent transactions. I can honestly say it was fascinating each and every day I looked forward to the new challenges.

Anti-theft systems and security in general is not a narrow topic of interest of mine, but it is quite enjoyable to discuss and to read about other people's knowledge. I also enjoy learning how the hardware itself operates in the case of anti-theft. When I was much younger, physical building (or car) security systems were simple current-break circuits. Now it's trivial to design an energy efficient, one-wire network of sensors at home using microcontrollers that can be as secure as the professional ones, using the same techniques. Fun stuff.

So, to NewTime and VideoDrome: Please do discuss your favorites!

I've got similar yearnings about pest control - it's the equipment. Fortunately, it doesn't go so far that I encourage pests so I can exterminate them, and my new place is pretty pest proof. A bit of ant action once a year and that's it.

I think using tinfoil lined containers bypasses them pretty easily.

I've sometimes triggered them when I walked into the store. Once, instead, the lights made a single blink, and a very short beep was heard. The watchman encouraged me to enter anyway. Needless to say, when I was walking out, having taken nothing from the store, the alarm went off, this time for real.

Yeah, I love those devices :)

Not always! In the case of SensorMatic type sensors, the tag is just a piece of metal in of a particular length, folded, so that it resonates and the return signal is picked up. You'd have to make a Faraday cage with your foil.

Such as completely wrapping it in the foil?
