I don't know y it happens. I can't really think of that right now. My boyfriend has a friend who goes there and I hope she is alright. I stayed in her house one time when I went to visit my boyfriend. I also have a friend from church who I think goes there too. I'm just a little bit worried right now.

With or without intent modern society tests people to destruction. Some fail in service - catastrophically. Society is not even a comfortable home to NTs anymore!

I go to Virginia Tech. From what I have heard (granted, this is at most hearsay now) the shootings occurred because of a fling gone bad or something along those lines.

The biggest issue is that the first call to 911 was made around 7:15. The campus was not closed. The shootings in West A.J. weren't preventable. The shootings in Norris were. The kid managed to get across the campus, through a large open area (the Drill Field) and into another building without being stopped. All I can figure is that he had a reasonably small automatic weapon. It would be concealable because of how windy it has been today: everyone that actually left their dorms / apartments were wearing jackets.

If you are on Facebook, a group was made to let people know that they are ok if they go here.

Modern society does seem to perpetuate these things. There have been other more collective type cultures that had very little incidence of violence, poverty, familial breakdown, etc. They may not have had modern conveniences but their societies were much healthier and happier.

I think the insanity that drives one to mass killing is common in the world. Easy availablity of guns in the US certainly is why you have alot of gun related mass killings
compared to other countries without them. Schools are easy targets as civilians are not
permited to legal bring them on campus.

I gave my sister a can of powerfull pepper spray to put in her backpack when she went to college. I was a little more prepared.

Thank you for saying that. Things like this make me want to move out of this country.

Shades: What a nightmare. I can't imagine what it must be like for you to be there. Are you going to stay on campus? Are they setting up psych/trauma services for you guys?

VT was a gun free zone. If students were allowed to own guns the students could have defended themselves and the death toll wouldn't have been as high.

UPDATE VIII: Via Instapundit, we find out that VT was a gun-free zone. A bill that would have allowed students and faculty to carry weapons failed in the Virginia Assembly.

Would it help prevent future events such as this? Possibly. This isn't exactly a common thing though.

i never understood why people were so stupid with guns, i own several. and id never have a flipout like that and use them on people. about as crazy as i get is i go deer hunting with my .357
