Okay, so who's superstitious? (And who wants to teach me how to spell that :P)
I ask simply because today is Black Friday (for the next 40 minutes, but still) and this is my 666th post! Now isn't that amazing? Coincidence?
In all seriousness, how many of you avoid walking under ladders and are either happy or sad at a black cat crossing your path? All of that stuff? Even if you don't believe in it?
I avoid walking under ladders and the like simply because of the superstition but I'm not really sure if I take it all that seriously. I also think black cats are rather pretty so I don't mind seeing them once in a while :P What about everyone else?
Now I'm just expecting something to happen

I'm not (knock wood)!

I have my odd little belief but I'm not terribly superstitious.

Sometimes I have this thougt pattern where I'm obsessed with things happening because they are lucky things balancing out unlucky things.
Wether that qualifies as superstitous I don't know

Walking under ladders is unlucky if the people on the ladders are holding heavy tools/buckets they might accidentally drop :D

As for made up unlucky things, I think challenging those got rid of 'normal' superstitions for good as a bonus.

No way, and no self-respecting AS person should be, unless they're just a kid or mentally still like one, because superstitions are completely illogical.

I'm on the opposite end of superstitiousness. I'm very objective and scientific in such matters and find other people's superstitious beliefs to be a form of entertainment: late-night documentaries!

I wanted to make a thread about this and Searched to see if there was already one.there was,so i figured i would revive this one :D
How many of you are superstitious? I'm not,my favourite hockey team just won their series and i shaved that night (the white in my beard makes me look old,i am 32 and its going white.what the hell)Most people would not have.
Could this have to do with logic.to me shaving can in no way affect how they play.

I would like to hear your opinion about this

Bumping a 8 year old thread isn't a good idea. If anyone doesn't notice the age of this thread and replies to the original posters they aren't going to get a response; they left the site years ago. Have you ever thought of a career in archaeology?

I'm not but I see no point in tempting providence!

I try not to put hats on the bed, shoes on the table (for cleanliness reasons also), walk under ladders (for safety's sake also), put up umbrellas indoors (and sometimes warn others (in a jocular way) about doing the same).

I haven't broken a mirror in years, mostly because it's messy and you could cut yourself but I suppose, the same goes for glass; BUT I must admit, to me, breaking a mirror does have a different feel to breaking a piece of glass. For example, just recently, I accidentally smashed my Melitta 12 cup coffee pot :( but, looking back on it, I must admit, superstition never sprung to mind so glass and mirrors do have a different feel to them. (The breaking of. Not the cutting by. That's the same. OUCH!! !)

Superstition is no different from religion - made up during a time when people had virtually no scientific knowledge and came up with ideas to explain the inexplicable. Why do bad things happen to good people? Oh a witch did it and we must kill her, and other nonsense. Anyone who is superstitious is very weak of mind. And in spite of all the science and knowledge humans have gained over the years, it still continues. I once heard that hundreds of black cats were being killed because of superstition in Rome up until 2008(!) when animal rights talked the Pope into banning such senseless massacre. People in developed countries would rather believe that illness is caused by demons and not germs and would willingly walk through a ward full of people with Ebola without any protection.

It's just ridiculous. It's less than an hour to 2016 (where I live), and people are still acting like they're in the Middle Ages. :(

Speaking of which, most holiday traditions are based on superstition. Like blowing horns and noisemakers when the clocks strike 12. People used to think it would scare away demons and evil spirits that might ruin the New Year. But I'm sure most people only do it now because it's fun. :)

I'm not superstitious in the usual ways. I'm superstitious in my own ways. Like, I'll worry that if I think about a person, that person is going to appear. Or I'll think that if I don't worry enough about what mark I'm going to get on a test, I'll be more likely to get a bad mark. Things like that.

Today I read that if you wash a baby's hands, you are supposedly washing out wealth and riches.

That's got to be the dumbest superstition yet. You have to wash babies' hands because they're always touching and grabbing and putting them in things that are disgusting. Must have been thought up back when people thought bathing was actually evil and unsanitary.
