Does anyone know any words, phrases or expressions for : a belief that was once regarded as the truth until it is now discarded?

Like for example the belief that women are not equal to men and are weaker lesser creatures.

"Myth" (n): 1. an idea or story that was believed by many people but that was never really true; 2. a story that was told in an ancient culture to explain a practice, belief, or natural occurrence but that was later proven not true.
