In the last couple of weeks we've had Hermit Thrushes, Red-Breasted Sapsuckers, Rufous Hummingbirds, Townsend's Warblers, and Varied Thrushes in our backyard. The humpback whales are back too and I just planted my raspberry patch a few days ago. I love springtime.

The first real sign of spring I got was last Friday. It was the official start of Motor Cycle Season! That is, it was the first day of the year that my next door neighbor turned on his motorcycle, and road away.

I got a second sign of spring Yesterday, when I went out to get the mail. I noticed a lot of tufts of dried grass on the floor of my porch just to the side of the front door. I kind of laughed to myself thinking that it looked like the kind of mess one would expect to see from a messy nest building project. I was about to continue on to the mailbox when I suddenly realized that I should take a look at the outside door light, which is just over where I saw the messy tufts of grass. I looked, and yes, there is a nest on top of the door light fixture. I suspect the couple that set up house keeping are a pair of house wrens that have made nests in a large arborvitae tree shrub in front of my home for several years. Either that, or maybe it's one of their newly married adult children. I hpe they don't mind the occasional use of my front door. The light fixture is right next to the door, and they are just going to have to put up with it.

Canolafields everywhere, they are very beautiful. Unfortunately, the flowers slowly start to wilt here.

Juvenile Great Crested Grebes on the lake. They look bigger than the parents and they're pied black and white, so I mistook them for oystercatchers at first glance. Meanwhile, savage goose battles have started over nesting sites.
