Headline in the news the other day said "Pope abolishes Limbo". Hey! I thought that was where I was! Anybody else in Limbo? Figuratively Speaking...

How could the Pope abolish it? It was never part of the
doctrine. Just some fantasy by soft hearted nuns.

Didn't Dante Aligheri invent it?

I think it predated him.

Are Limbo and Purgatory the same thing?

Tim

Not by my understanding. Purgatory was
the intermediate place, whilst limbo was
just for the babies who didn't have a chance
to be baptized.

No, they're different. Purgatory is supposed to be where people go to be purified before they go to Heaven. That is, they are destined for Heaven but not yet ready for it, so they go to Purgatory for a while first. Limbo is supposed to be where unbaptised babies go, because they can't go to Heaven because they are not baptised but they can't go to Hell because they are innocent, so they're just... in Limbo.

It's no wonder that Western Christians are accused of being legalistic.

My partner’s first six-years of schooling was severed up by a bunch of nuns with rulers, as a weapon as well as for measure (Poor girl). Though the strict nature did serve her well establishing study habits and an academic aptitude. Smart gal.

Though my partner parted-ways with the dogma long ago, she’s a good source of facts about Catholicism. Yes, babies have been saved...

I laughed when I read the article and learned the origins of the word Limbo. Always used the word in context with my state of mind on many occasions -- In between, midpoint, etc. etc.; and when I read the article, thought: hey! with a smile, I like being in limbo sometimes.... :D

I remember that story from some months back.

EDIT: For a change like that I would think he would have to sit in "the official chair" (whatever it's called). That hasn't been done in a while.

They did away with limbo because people are so fat nowadays that noone can bend over far enough to fit under that bar. Duh.

Religion is just a more discreet form of crowd control.

According to Dante, Limbo is in Hell. Er, the nice bit of Hell.

Yeah, it was filled with flowers and bells and unicorns, and happy little elves with funny little hats ;)
