"Take on me" What's that supposed to mean?

"Take on me. Take on me. Take me on. Take on me".

Just what is this supposed to mean? It doesn't make sense.

I understand it as taking on the responsibility of someone. Like you might 'take on' a pet.

"Take on me" might mean "accept me as your partner" and the responsibility that comes with that.

I could be way off the mark, though.

"Take on me" is a more awkward way of the more usual term "take me on," in this instance meaning "give me a try, give a relationship with me a try."

It can mean a responsibility, or just giving the person a try. Someone wanting a game of tennis could say "I'll take you on!" or "Anyone want to take me on? I warn you I'll win, I'm good!"

It just means give the person a try. "Take on me" is a bit backwards though and not normally the order of words. It was that band's second language so that might be why.

All I know is that the 80's rocked.
