need ausie travel info

I know this probally isn't the best venue for these questions but not sure where to get the info and I know there are a lot people from Australia on this site.

My dd is traveling there this summer for a couple of weeks and I am a country bumpkin that has never left the states in my life so I am not up on this kinda stuff.

Spending money -does she take US dollars or something like traveling checks?
Phone calls- anyone know what the average call to the US from Australia will cost and what type of calling card would work? Her cell phone is virgin mobile and it might work there but she couldn't keep it charged because of the power difference. So I am not sure what is the best option on calls either.

you can change money here. travellers cheques, whatever it's up to her. i'm not sure how much money you can bring in to the country in cash, i'm not well travelled myself (only been O/S once) so i'm not up on these things. i think travellers cheques are regarded as safer or less easily stolen and used.


i think overseas calls are cheap, when i look at the rates they're cheaper than interstate calls here. it would depend on her provider though I spose. you can buy phone cards here (at newsagents and supermarkets and lots of other places) and use public phones, i think that's very cheap and it's geared towards travellers. i know a lot of them use these cards. they would sell them at the airport and the calling rates are on the back of the card or something.

1. You can change you money to Aussie dollars before you come, or after. I'm not sure these days how travellers cheques compare to just using an ATM - it would be something to ask your bank.

2. Most backpackers and the like just buy a cheap pre-paid mobile when they arrive. You can get one for less than $100, often with free calls thrown in. Then, when you leave either send it to the recyclers, or on-sell it to another traveller.
