The Order of Canada, that is.

I heard about this petition today & signed it. Considering the list of Canadians mentioned in the article that have been given The Order of Canada that I've never even heard of before, I really do hope our gov't responds to the will of the people and bestows this honour upon Gord ASAP while he's still alive.

For those who have no idea who he is: He's the lead singer of The Tragically Hip - arguably the most well known Canadian band across the country, for the last 2+ decades. I doubt most Americans have ever heard of them.. as they truly are a Canadian thing. So is their music & lyrics.

I was fortunate enough to see them live a few years ago. 8) And being the cool guy that he is, despite the fact that he's dying of terminal brain cancer, they're still going to tour this Summer. IF timing & finances allow, I might just to get to see him do his thing one last time. That would be pretty cool. But if not, at least I got to see them once already.

I scored a row 19 floor ticket to their July 24th concert in Vancouver!

Thanks to my brothers & one of their fiancees hopping online when presale tickets went on sale this morning. ~5 people tried on behalf of my twin brother's code. One of them got a balcony pair, so my brother and his friend will go to that one. Then it looks like it's going to be myself, my twin brother, my older brother, and our sister all going to the one w/ floor seats. That'll be a family first.

All in they're $188cdn/ticket, and apparently they're already being advertised for $500/ticket today. None of us will sell our tickets. Yeah, it's the most expensive concert ticket I've ever bought.. buuuut this is kind of a very limited opportunity given Gord's prognosis and all & so I didn't even have to think twice about whether I was in or not.

This might jusrt be the most touching concert I ever attend in my life. For reals. I bet there are going to be a lot of very emotional people there.

It's kind of hard to think of an American music/pop culture icon that would be the equivalent to what Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip are to Canadians.. but yeah, the price tags tickets fetch in the coming weeks should be an indication of just how much Canadians value the 'Hip.

This is prbably my favourite Hip song:

They've got a lot of very popular songs, though. Have a click through youtube. There's a full concert on there, too.

So the rest of the (non-presale) tickets went on sale at 10am yesterday and sold out in.. about 3 minutes flat. My boss was super choked that he wasn't able to get any tickets. Same goes for many in the city and across the country.

Yesterday, Canadians were pretty much doing a collective:

at not being able to get Hip tickets.

This is pretty much *THE* concert of the Summer in terms of desirability. Pretty stoked that I'll get to be there.. in row 19 on the floor. 8)

In other concert news, man-o-man there are a LOT of music festivals now and I WISH I had time and money to go to some of them.. especially the ones that are in stunningly beautiful super serene scenic places. Ah well, I've got a LOT of fun going on this Summer.. Tough Mudder, Hip, Kiteboarding, beach, parties etc sooo I'm not exactly being deprived lol just don't have time and money to do ALL THE THINGS & simply have to add them to the bucket list and maybe do one or two new things per year. I'm okay with that. 8)

OK, I'm a heretic, I'm a Canadian but I've never listened to The Tragically Hip. Like, I've probably heard one of their songs on the radio at some point, but I don't really know their material.

Tonight's the night! Concert time!

Having coffee/breaky, then gonna load my gear in my car and rip ~120kms to the beach and go kiteboarding on the ocean in Howe Sound for a couple hours (went yesterday before watching the Netherlands entry in the international fireworks competition last night!), then back down out of the mountains into Vancouver to meet up with my brothers and sister for dinner around 5 before heading into Rogers Arena for what's sure to be one HELL of an emotional concert.

Their Final concert will be played in their hometown of Kingston Ontario and broadcast live on CBC across the country.. it's likely going to be playing on almost EVERY screen possible - every bar, hopefully in movie theatres, possibly at arenas. If you're not Canadian you simply cannot grasp how big of a deal this is.
