I've always thought that people are required to burp. It's like passing gas. However I had a teacher who would tell the class that people don't actually have to burp and that it was a disgusting thing to do. It thought it was ridiculous. However I once had this teacher who whenever someone in the class would burp and then say "excuse me". She'd say don't burp, that's disgusting. They'd be like "I said excuse me". And she would say "just don't do it".

One of the kids said to the teacher, I thought we had to burp. She said "no, you don't, do you ever hear me burp? Burping is rude and disgusting. Polite people never burp.".

Polite people never burp, never fart, never need to go to the bathroom, and never produce disgusting waste in general, because they're immaterial angels coming from Heaven. If you do, it's a sign you're an inferior being who forgot to evolve. And that isn't eco-friendly either, you're contributing to global warming. /sarcasm off
More seriously, yes, burping is considered rude in the western world. It isn't universal though. In Maghreb, burping after eating means that the meal was good.

Why we might be expected to keep uncomfortable gas inside us, when it is a perfectly natural thing, is quite beyond me. It's not as if I belch right in people's faces or anything. I always put my hand over my mouth, try to do it quietly, and excuse myself afterwards.

I don't burp much, only when eating or drinking. Usually after a big meal I have to burp, and I can't always control how loud it comes out. When I feel the wind coming up I put my hand over my mouth and burp into my hand. Other times I get the hiccups and I bring up burps during and between hiccups.

Ah yes, but in the case of 5th grade boys, we were required to burp...uh, belch...and when doing so, we obtained much extra credit for being able to voice recognizable words. For instance, a friend of mine always enjoyed riffing off the phrase "Ralph Nader" while expelling billows of gas from his stomach.

Now, I'm not saying we aren't polite, but for guys, there's always a little 5th grade boy inside...

When I had my colonoscopy the nurse warned me to burp or else I risked having severe pain from the gas they put into me.
