Of course it's not, unless this squishy couch I'm sitting on spontaneously combusted somehow...

I guess we can put that on my gravestone: Here lies (my real name), 1974 - 20XX. She sat down.

I remember there was some politician who wanted to tax sofas because people sitting down playing video-games caused obesity or some weird thing like that.

Is this why we don't tax companies?

I do remember there being a load of talk about this in the British media. From what I remember it was the usual tale of atrocious science reporting in the mainstream media.

If I remember rightly, the scientists had found a correlation between people who spend most of the day sitting, and differences in health an longevity - in particular people who sit at a desk all day at work. The media then reported that with the usual hyperbole, along the lines of "Working at an office desk is going to kill everyone!".

As with most such reports, the truth is far less dramatic. We already know that exercise plays its part in having a healthy lifestyle - so that much should be common sense by now. The thing about specifically about sitting at a desk has since been shown to be true of just about any posture - if you remain in that posture all day long without variation. So, standing in the same place all day would be just as unhealthy as sitting all day. Which personally, I don't find all that surprising, and isn't even a particularly new discovery!

i don't smoke, and i think it's disgusting unless u enjoy it. actually smoking is not really that bad unless it hinders your progress in your sport.
if u r not athletic i don't see why people want to quit. why qyit something u enjoy.

and oh actually most real athletes have that tendency to die young.

edit: i wanted to say people should forget about what dumb doctors say and enjoy their life. life is actually short to worry about bs

Smoking is much worse than sitting.

I am up to the equivalent of smoking several packs a day of sitting on my ass.

If sitting down was so bad for us then why did nature give us bums?

actually, it is just as bad as smoking.

you don't pick up a cigarette and just drop dead, it's a slow decay over a long period of time that likely ends in cancer. same with "sitting" which is actually code for not exercising. if you don't exercise, aka, sit around on the internet/watch tv all day, you're very much more likely to have diabetes, heart disease, etc.. that's where the phrase comes from.

I'd say sitting on a bike and pedalling is quite healthy. It's also "code" for not smoking, 'cause the wind won't let you :P

Then again, some coal roller may have fun smoking you like a salmon.

If I can ever afford it, I'm going to make a contraption to power a computer by pedalling so I can have the best of both worlds.
