One thing I've been thinking of doing to help get me through the winter months is starting an indoor herb garden again. Due to low light and having a window that doesn't face the sun, I can't grow much, but I think it would be nice to gave more green in my apartment.

Does anyone else here do this, and do you find it helps you feel better to take care of plants?

^ Oh, Lordy, yes.
Gardening is infinitely satisfying to me. I have a large garden where I grow my own fruits and vegetables, herbs, ornamentals and flowers.
it has also been proven that indoor plants can filter the air and improve your mood, so I say go for it :thumleft:

Indeed yes. My little cabin / garden flat is a little dark inside for plants, but there are plenty on my "stoep" (veranda).

It's very rewarding and therapeutic to grow your own plants.

I never have any luck with parsley, however. Very finicky plant!

High efficiency LED bulbs are making indoor gardening much more practical.

I've considered it, but I have a very large outdoor garden and actually appreciate the fact that I can only garden half the year.

Are these bulbs expensive?

I'm always growing things indoors and find gardening very therapeutic. One of my better projects last year was growing a bed of herbs in an elongated pot for window sills. Of the three species I selected, the Lavender was a goner (on average I've always found Lavender quite hard to grow indoors; it easily gets 'leggy' and seems to need a great deal of light and air). But the Thyme took off very nicely and all but dominates what Oregano I also managed to grow.
I love scouring discounted sections in places for houseplants, too - one of my favourite pastimes is to find the most neglected, half-dead plant on offer at a fraction of it's original price, and nurturing it back to full glory. Depends of course if the plant is a seasonal variety that dies off after it's flowering period is done, but for many other species it's simply a case of them not having a dedicated human to look after it, many last for years. :) Also: Coleuses. Though not herbs and very much an outdoor plant, so long as you regularly prune away the new growth to prevent it becoming too large and spindly, they can become absolutely beautiful houseplants.

You can buy 12 to 24W LED grow bulbs for less than $20 these days. They have colors optimized for growing.

I have an Aerogarden - countertop hydroponic garden. I haven't grown anything in it for a few years now, really I probably should one of these days.. but anyways, they're not as cheap as seeds and soil, but they do a FANTASTIC job of growing a lot of really good stuff indoors:

They're pre-programmed for automatic watering and light on/off settings etc so you don't have to do much at all in order to grow a bunch of salad or herbs etc.
