Remember when your teacher taught you to do this?

Be honest. Is there anyone here who actually does this?

I have never used this in any post. I'm not even using it now. I just look at the keys and find the letters ... because I learned absolutely nothing from typing lessons.

No I do not. My fingers go all over and I type with my pointers.

Broadly speaking I type like that, admittedly with a slight bias for my dominant hand.

I wasn't taught to type like this though, it's a byproduct of guitar/piano finger independence.

I can type very quickly in the conventional way--except that on the Internet apps often screw things up.

Nope. The most number of fingers I use at any time while typing is 5.

Nope, never learned how to use the "home keys". I find I typically type with my left middle finger and my right index and middle fingers. It may not be the "correct" way, but I still manage to type relatively fast.

I do type that way, but it wasn't because teachers taught me....lol I was terrible at typing in computer class. I had to look at the keys and still got slow typing speeds, I remember they also had boxes to put over the keyboards so we couldn't look and could do it by memory. So yeah I always figured I just sucked at typing.

But then eventually just posting on forums and going on chat-rooms and typing school papers on my own time is what taught me. I think maybe the trouble is when they taught typing you just had to type a bunch of random letters and gibberish at a certain speed to do well which didn't stimulate my mind enough and involved too much pressure. Whereas when I did more typing for an actual purpose I just gradually got better. Now I can type with the correct hand positioning without looking pretty fast.

Also there is a trick the j and f keys each have a raised bump where you put your pointer fingers, and then everything else just falls into place.

No. I am waaay faster at hunt-and-peck typing.

But hey, ain't no need to type "right" if you can do it absurdly fast.

True, however I am just imagining my poor hands if I was to try typing fast that way.

I always type using my two index fingers only. It's what I've always done, ever since I first learnt to type. I feel comfortable typing that way, and I can still type really fast.

At school kids used to criticise or make fun of me for typing that way, because at high school you have to do everything in a precise away otherwise you get made fun of. So I had to type their way, which I couldn't get on with. Now people in public libraries and places don't take a lot of notice of how others type, and usually I type at home anyway (as I'm always using a mobile device when out in public now so I rarely need to use public computers), so I can type how I like without dickhead kids making fun of me.

I generally use my three middle fingers for typing. We didn't learn typing at school (as far as I remember) and taught myself. Until I was about 13 I used only my indexes to type and it took ages to write a single word so I observed other people doing it and copied their style.

Nope. Never could work it out.

I use my index finger for most typing. Second finger from the left does the Shift Key. Second finger from the right hits the Enter Key and direction arrows. Middle finger on the right hits the Backspace Key. Those are the only variances.

I don't look at the keys though, so it's all an automatic process and I am extremely fast. People are always amazed how fast I can type, though I don't think anyone has really paid attention to how I do it.

Yes I do actually stick to ten-finger touch-typing, but over the years a couple of fingers have crept into their own variations on a couple of keys.

But 98% of my typing is the correct position and the ten-finger method. I really enjoy it actually, it's kind of satisfying and it's quick, though my speed isn't the fastest some people can type.

That was the case with me too. I never had a computer till after I graduated high-school so I had no experience typing except in the computer class & sometimes in a couple other classes. We had to take typing speed test & she increased the required speed for most everyone except me. I have bad fine motor-skills & a tremor disorder that can act up when doing things with fine motor-skills so that may of been a factor too. What made me get better at typing was posting on forums, web browsing, & chatting in messengers like ICQ, MSN, & Yahoo.

I think I do type the correct way for the most part but I sometimes look at my keys while I type. I still make some typing mistakes & they're worse when I type fast. Some of the mistakes could be due to my dyslexia causing me to misspell/mistype like I'll spell "The", "Hte" or something. I type pretty loud too for some reason.
