Do you like white elephant gift exchanges?

I dont for two reasons:

1)people bring good gifts instead of funny ones, so if you bring a funny one it makes you feel bad

2)You either get a crummy gift or you have to steal from someone and then if the say something like Oh Man! you dont know if they are really mad or just playing around.

People tend to lack imagination when giving gifts at these types of exchanges. Christmas party gift exchanges usually consist of Santa Claus and snowmen type items. (Pillows, stuffed toys, snow globes, and the like, ad nauseum).

The only white elephants I've played the gifts weren't opened before they got stolen. Then at the end everyone opened them. I like that way better. The reason I like white elephant Christmas parties is because it's a structured activity and I don't have to try to mingle awkwardly like most other parties.

I used to think white elephants literally involved white elephants- not the real thing mind you, but models and toys etc.

Same. My parents actually once went to one where they were given four white elephant models.

my dad's family does it every year, except for the last, because we had the situation where some people were actually thoughtful and bought toy cars for the kids and small knife sets and other nice little things, whereas others just dug up crap they might have found under their bed, or in the corner of their closet.

it happened again this year.
