Is "pussycat" a bad word?

I guess the word "pussycat" has an older innocent use of the word "p****", however it seems like it's a word not used as much nowadays due to the other meaning.

Not really. It's just one of those words/expressions that fell out of use due to age, much like consarnit.

I call my two feline companion animals pussycats all the time, and no one seems to have a problem with it. But if I didn't put the word cat at the end...

It's just like how it's still okay to say "cocky", meaning an overconfident or arrogant person, but remove the y and the last thing people will think these days is that it means a male chicken.

Just about every word can sound dirty these days.

You're right that people don't use it as often because of the other meaning. However, it's not a bad word.

I didn't think p**** was a bad word, either. Indeed, I know some women who use both it and the "C bomb" conversationally. When I saw this topic title though I thought of "pussyfoot," meaning to be indirect. Maybe that's out of usage, but I'd still use it!
