They're not used as much nowadays, because people use their cellphones to take pictures.

Yes and no. I can say the same about cars made in the 70's to 90's, but there are people who drive old cars still. Digital is getting more affordable and more people are using digital cameras. Camera companys are no longer using film cameras, and have decided to stay with digital, but there are people who still want to make a darkroom in their basement and develop the film in their old cameras to pictures.

Now if this is a question whether something like a Sony A7s Mk II Mirrorless Digital Camera is replaceable by an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy, then you are not speaking for most photographers, and it's not the camera that makes the photo, but it is the person.

If you are speaking about instagram and Facebook pictures, then yes most people use their cell phones, but not for pictures like you would see in magazines, or the news, or even in sports. When you watch a football game there is a professional photographer with a DSLR camera; The photographer will be holding either a Nikon DSLR or a Canon DSLR.

I doubt that most filmmakers would prefer using a smartphone over a camcorder, but here again, you put a smartphone in your pocket and take the phone out to take video or take a photo.

I take most of my photos with my phone, but I have a digital camera I use for special occasions. I want to buy one of those new Polaroid-like cameras that prints the pictures, I think they are really cool.

Are you sure they aren't just Polaroid cameras? my sister got one and one of my brothers friends had one they brought over and they had the Polaroid logo. I think hipsters revived the trend lol. I am not sure if its old refurbished Polaroid cameras people are getting of if they have started manufacturing new ones.

a serious filmmaker wouldn't be caught dead trying to make a movie with his phone.

i imagine traditional cameras will always be at the cutting edge of camera tech, features there "trickling down" into phone cameras...so to speak.

If anything, I think traditional cameras will come back into vogue in 25 years. Turntables are back with a vengeance.

One of my dad's friends takes pictures of things that he sells to individuals. He prefers a traditional camera because the quality is better.

With the latest batch, most consumers would be satisfied with a phone. Hobbyist would still be in the prosumer market, same for business owners. The high end will always have a market... But I wouldn't be surprised if consumer cameras die off in the next 5-10 years.
