They are in a bankruptcy again. They were in one just a couple of years ago. RadioShack was a cool store. They had lots of cool things there.

I think they have too many obsolete products. The one near me is among the stores closing.

I remember saving up for their "20 in 1" kit of electronic experiments and building things like little crystal sets and radio receivers way back in the day, probably over 40 years ago now. They were branded as "Tandy" in the UK, and had a store in teh little town where I lived as a child.

It always looked a slightly odd operations, brands which only ever featured in Tandy stores, some of which looked a bit naff when one took a closer look.

I remember buying components there until about 1977, when Maplin (a UK electronics retailer) started to establish its mail order business in a serious and professional way. In Tandy, it was 11 pence for two resistors on a piece of display card, from Maplin's resistors were (I think) a penny each. I think at that point Tandy became relegated to a place of last resort if I needed something urgently and couldn't wait for a Maplin order, though generally the various second hand TV shops which had their zenith at the time proved a better source, as the component was often to repair a neihbour's TV set.

Sad to report most of the stuff they offered generally looked a poorer quality version of things I could get elsewhere, usually Maplins, and I was surprised to read that the operation lasted as long as it did.

I grew up on their audio equipment, made per contract by foster electronics of japan, and it was better than it was commonly made out to be. I still have two pair of their speakers, acoustic suspension designs that have real deep bass output unlike a lot of consumer-priced speakers nowadays.

I love Radio Shack. I can't believe this is happening again. I guess the trick is to find people who like the 60s and 70s and get them to shop there, so that they can recover.

Radio Shack is about gone, and now Sears is on its way to follow -- another American retail icon. Some Sears locations are looking like old department stores from the USSR.

i recently went to a sears, shopping for a new tool cabinet with my old man and while i didn't see the whole place, it looked fully stocked as ever.

don't know if that's worse.

americans did spend on and build a metric assload of retail space back in the day, that much is true. am not sure how different the current catastrophe would be if less was made.

I've honestly only been to RadioShack like a couple of times in live. So it's not nostalgic store for me like it is for you guys. I had no point to ever get things there. Walmart or Best Buy already has it.

it was my first exposure to things like CB radios and stereo equipment, as the other stores were a bit of a long drive away. I remember there useta be a radshack in every suburb, about 30-40 blocks from each other [on the main drags], on average, in the town I grew up in.
