Like the one in this video. It's pretty long.

Nah. I've ridden some pretty long ones when I lived in Vegas. There's a long one in Seattle too.

Granted I've never been on an escalator that long, but since I have no problems with shorter ones, I don't know why I would mind it. It looks pretty fun actually.

Elevators on the other hand...

I'm kind of nervous of them, but probably mainly because there aren't any escalators where I live and I'm not used to them. All the malls where I live are dinky little one-level buildings. When I travel to a place where the malls are multi-level, then I use the escalators. I've also used elevators quite a bit, but I'm not fond of them. Especially when they move faster than usual and it feels like we're plummeting to our death. :skull:

Last summer my mom and I stayed in a hotel that had an elevator like this and I completely freaked. I'd been in elevators in other hotels but didn't have any unusual problems. My mother then started growling at me, I was bawling, she felt bad and realized nothing she said was really going to help the situation, and we relocated to a room on the ground floor.

What can I do? I don't want my mom or anyone else feeling like they're walking on eggshells around me, but I can't always predict something is going to get me triggered. :(

You call them "escalators"? We call them "moving stairs" in Polish because thats what they are - moving stairs.
The only thing that is scary about them is getting on and off - I am afraid of losing balance. And the sound they make sometimes - I can't stop imagining they will break and I will collapse with them if they are really loud but I know it won't happen.

Other than that they are no different than average stairs. And If they stop you can easily get off them like you would from any other stairs so there is no fear of being stuck.

I'm afraid of all escalators, especially going down on them. I'm always afraid I'm going to accidentally step between the stairs when I get on and fall all the way down when they separate. The height and the edges of the steps look very intimidating, should that happen.

Escalators, long or short, do not bother me at ALL.

Dozens of escalators on the DC metro system are longer than that, and no one ever remarks upon those DC Metro escalators as being in any way....remarkable.

No. I'm not an exception to the human race. Am not afraid of escalators.

I've ridden shorter 1s more than a few times & don't remember ever having a problem except maybe when I was little so I think I'll be fine on a long one.

In around 1987 an escalator story appeared on the TV news - not a nice story - and it went like this:

A woman in a busy train station was riding on an ancient Victorian escalator, when the wooden step, on which she was standing, broke. This caused the woman to fall through and into the escalator mechanism, she started screaming in agony as the machine began to chew up her lower body. Her head and shoulders were still above the broken step, but most of her body was hidden beneath. This went on for some minutes with people scrambling around trying to find a way to stop the machine.

It was rush hour and many people witnessed the horrific incident, but unfortunately for the woman involved, nobody could stop the escalator from remorselessly chewing her body, and she was killed before it finally got switched off. This whole incident was caused by the age and design of the escalator, and as a direct result, all escalators of a similar age and design were instantly made obsolete, and were banned across the entire country.

I still recall this horrible story on that news programme all these years later. What a terrible death.

IDGAF, I'll walk right up to a long escalator, then walk right up it.
