I rarely took the bus in school. My mom, dad, or sister always dropped me off. When I did ride the bus, I got harassed so I avoided it.

The buses always had seat belts but no one ever used them.

Yes, I rode the bus to school in middle and high school. Though it was a bus for disabled kids, there weren't seat belts or harnesses.

I rode a minibus to school. It was all the way on the other side of town and I couldn't get public buses independently so I had no option.

They usually had seatbelts, though I remember one (possibly back in primary school) which had harnesses. They were dark grey with red stitching and the clicker things had a red button. I thought they looked cool.

My Dad's car didn't even have seat belts when I went to school.

I rode the bus from Kindergarten through 3rd grade. When I went to 4th grade I went to the same skewl my mom taught at because the skewl I went to before only went to 3rd grade & my mom started teaching there that year so I just rode with my mom. I went to private skewls after 4th grade & one didn't have bus service at all & the other two were in a different parish than we lived(parish is Louisiana word for county). We did ride skewl-buses for field trips thou. Anyways.. the buses I rode didn't have seat-belts or harnesses.

When I was younger we lived close enough to the school that I could walk to it, which was common before all the Stranger Danger and fear-mongering ruined society.

When I was around eleven, we moved to a bigger house that was farther away from the school, so I started taking the bus. It was a typical school bus with no seat belts. When I started going to junior high the school was in another town, and I had to take the bus, even though I'd be driven almost insane by the other kids.

I never understood this thing about parents having to get up early to help their kids get ready for school, unless they get up at around the same time to go to work, and then drive their kids there, even when they're teenagers. My brother and I were perfectly capable of getting up, eating some cereal, brushing our teeth, washing up and combing our hair while our parents were in bed asleep. How dare we do things on our own our parents were so horrible! (sarcasm)

I think it's great you were able to get up early on your own to do those things. I always had a hard time waking up for skewl because I HATED going & went to bed later than I should partly because I wanted/needed to wind down before going to bed & because I felt better staying up later. My parents had to get ready for work so they were up anyways to wake me. I managed to get myself ready OK for work but one of my parents had to bring me since I cant drive & there really wasn't public transportation available so someone woke me up but I got up & ready OK after someone came in.

Mostly. The first year they had to carry me on the bus in full meltdown every morning for first grade.
Later I adapted to the misery, the school buses were always overcrowded and sometimes three to a seat.I hated having other people sitting close enough to touch me.Especially when it was hot and the seats would get all sweaty.
It was better in high school,I like to sit on the very back seat.

I rode the bus to and from school every day from Grades 2 to 7. I hated it. The kids on my bus were very immature whether they were older or younger than me.

I rode the school bus until high school. Seat belts hadn't been invented yet. There were 2 buses - #2 and #4. The driver for #2 was mean and we screamed and jumped the whole way. The driver for #4 was a nice guy and we just sat and talked quietly. I was the outcast, so everybody got on before me but nobody sat down until I did, so they could make a great show of refusing to sit with me, twice a day, every day.

^^ I spent much of my childhood and adolescence wanting to throttle adults (and adolescent peers) who idealized children as sweet innocent little darlings, because I saw this happen to others and similar exclusionary meanness sometimes happened to me. Sorry you had to deal with that.

Wow, when did I ride school buses. 1969 - 1973. Not a seat belt to be seen. Cars only had lap belts then. I don't remember what year seat belts in cars became mandatory, but IIRC it was after 1965; I'm reasonably certain Unsafe At Any Speed was published that year.

I rode the bus from elementary school until partway through high school, when my mom got a job at the school library and could take me in when she left for work. I hated the bus, it was always crowded and noisy. There were no seat belts or harnesses in the ones I rode.
