Kids used to get in trouble in school for saying "this sucks". Nowadays hardly any teachers bat an eyelash at such. It has evolved to become nearly acceptable.

When I was at school (10 years ago) you could get into trouble for saying relatively mild swearwords in class. So I think it all depends on the school.

The word "BS" still isn't in dictionaries. "Slang?" Nonsense, that's someone's subjective snobbish judgemental sentiment, about a word that's probably the most often-used noun in the English language.

For that matter, we say:

I don't
We don't
You (singular) don't
You (plural) don't
They don't
but...
He doesn't ?

:D

That's silly.

We traded "Thou" (nominative singular) and "Ye" (nominative plural) for "You" (former accusative plural, now nominative & acc. sing. & pl.). And so now we have to find awkward artificial ways to express you plural, like "You all", "Yous", "You guys", or "You lot". Of course "You guys" is the most common here, except in the South, even when speaking to a group of women. I like "You lot", but someone once asked, "In what part of Florida do they say "You lot"? ".

Bring back Thou and Ye.

And what if you mean "Am I not ...?". But maybe you're in company such that you don't want to sound Shakespearean. Then most people say "Aren't I?" Abyssmal grammar. "I are?" But there's a contraction for "Am not" . It's "Ain't". So you can say, "Ain't I?" But no, that's a no-no :D

Yeah, I'm surprised even I say it sometimes. But I had to learn to tolerate some things so I wouldn't become non-functioning insane.

I still remember when saying "butt" was considered very rude in Canada until sometime during the 1990's. It was more acceptable to say "bum" like they do in the UK. I remember watching Diff'rent Strokes as a kid and being very surprised when Arnold said the world a few times on the show.

Not only did he say it, but they kind of showed it in a photo that Kimberly secretly took of him when he had been taking a shower. It was a fuzzy B&W photo, and it was mostly hidden under a towel, but there he was, yelling "That's my bare butt!" Arnold said at the end he had learned a lesson, as the characters usually did... "Next time Kimberly's around, take a shower with your shorts on." 8O

Weird thing is they probably wouldn't get away with that in a family-friendly sitcom now, even if they get away with everything else. Parents would be screaming about child porn. And this was the same show where Arnold almost became a victim of child molestation!

I don't think I've had someone get upset at me for saying "this sucks" since I was about 9 years old.

I don’t think “sucks” counts as a swear word. It’s borderline, like the word “crap.” It’s not like saying an f-bomb. I say it all the time and no one cares.

Yeah. I'm older and even I don't remember any schoolmate be reprimanded for say "it sucks". Had a college roommate who would say "it sucks a purple donkey dick". That would have been forbidden in public school.

I went to a dyslexic school from middle of 6th through 8th grade & I remember our principal doing a big speal about how sux was a bad word & how she didn't understand what people meant when they used it. She was from India thou so maybe that was some of it.
