Food for thought...

Secular Christmas begins the day after Thanksgiving and by the actual date of December 25th, is a distant memory . Christmas trees are taken down by New Years. Real Christmas starts Christmas Eve and ends January 5th. During these 12 days you are feasting and being Merry. The secular Christmas is full of after Thanksgiving day sales in which people battle it out for 50% off an X box or 42" inch screen smart TV. The real Christmas is when people take the time to make or exchange thoughtful presents to their loved ones and remember the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, God's gift to us . It is a time of reflection and gratitude. Secular Christmas is being in a Starbucks in some shopping mall while they play banal repetitive Pop songs that talk about snow, things that jingle, and how to get drunk on egg nog. Real Christmas is the most inspired music ever created about hope, joy, peace, goodwill toward men, and the miracle virgin birth at Bethlehem which changed the world as we know it. So.. which do you prefer?

I have a pagan celebration, which is the rebirth of the sun, rather than the birth of the son.

Secular Christmas doesn't have to be superficial, though. It can be about love, peace, joy, goodwill, etc. Just look at all the Christmas movies that have important messages despite not being religious.

The only real Christmas is the one where we celebrate the birth of our lord and and savior, Santa Claus. :santa:

Yule is where it's at. Feast to get through the winter, and hibernate if at all possible.

I haven't been excited about Christmas for a while, but I'm having my son with me and he's only six so I might get reflected excitement from him.

Interestingly enough, there was an actual Saint Nicholas from which Santa was derrived. I'll see if I can find the story.

Jesus was born in September or October, but it just wouldn't be Christmas if it was celebrated then.

I'm a Secular Humanist & the real Christmas is too religious for me but I find the Secular one WAAAY too commercialized so I don't really celebrate either & don't really celebrate xMas in general.

Considering the "real Christmas" had absolutely nothing to do with Jesus and was a tradition that preceded him by thousands of years ...
Considering that in most of the world, there is no such holiday as "Thanksgiving" ...
Considering that in half the planet, it's summer ...
Considering that the majority of the world's population cannot afford an x-box, or a big smart TV ...
I'd just ignore the whole hybrid mess if I had my way, but unfortunately, proverbially not even a queer is an island

Neither. I celebrate Christmas the way my family has taught me and will continue doing so unless I find a better way.

This is the first time I've ever heard about thanks giving having something to do with Christmas by the way... we don't celebrate it here and I'm pretty sure I don't personally know anyone who does... or well, maybe my old English teacher, who is British, does, but I can't think of anyone else. Cultural differences and all that.

The real one even though I'm probably more Pastafarian than anything.

Why would anyone oppose Buddhist Christmas anyway?

From where I live, people celebrates Christmas sort of both ways...

Depending which region, thanks giving may or may not exist nor celebrated.
Christmas here starts at September, and depending which region when Christmas ends.

Discounts and deals at the shops and malls, exchanging gifts, parties, holiday day offs, pop music about Christmas blaring around, Christmas trees and Santa Claus, etc.
So is the spiritual/religious stuff of gratitude, hope for good change and will, celebration of birth of Christ, and 12 days of… Uhm, here, it's called 'Simbang(Church) Gabi(Night)', right before 25th of December instead of after it.

Thankfully no one in my family is religious, so we don't celebrate an alleged events that may or may not have any basis in reality 2000 years ago, we celebrate jul, and that means real things like delicious food, presents, family, quality time, warmth, joy and love.
And I very much enjoy some 'pop songs about snow' and other Xmassy things.
That is real jul.

My Christmas started in August when I bought the first present  More seriously jul starts with advent for me, and ends with New Year's Eve.

 Yup, the real Christmas celebrated months too late because the church had to be able to compete with pagan faiths!

I get about two weeks off work and spend it with my daughter.

I'm not really the type to celebrate even my own birthday so I don't celebrate Jesus the redeemer's birthday either.

But my daughter's taking me away for a few days during this Yuletide.
