"Can I borrow some paper?"

"Can I borrow some paper?" is a question I'd commonly be asked by my classmates in high school. No, you can HAVE some paper. I don't expect you to return it.

When someone asks for a piece of paper, I tear off a penny-sized piece and give it to them. If they want more, they should ask for a sheet.

I would just give the person a sheet of paper---if you feel like it.

Giving someone less than that would be seen as being insulting. This is not something you want to do in high school. Talk about bully fodder!

From where I live, people are aware of the term differences.

So if someone did said 'borrow' something that is a nondurable and a consumable, people would end up with a joke and a punch line.

Reminds me of the teachers I had who when I asked "can I go the bathroom" they would say "I don't know can you?" since the technical proper grammar would be "may I go". Don't worry about it too much if you understand what they mean. People tend to get annoyed by the "grammar Nazi".
