Doing a weekly/fortnightly online shop or doing several shops a week in an actual supermarket ?

By carefully choosing stuff that is on sale I can cut my grocery bill by about 1/3.

Many households waste a lot of food. Stuff gets thrown out without getting eaten. Sometimes it is better to buy smaller quantities so you can eat it all before it spoils. You can save by buying just enough food for your needs.

There's also online ordering then you go pick it up - the store gets your order and bags it and you prepay online.

I'm always a bit leery of that; I like to check expiration dates and pick my own produce...

Shipping used to be free if you've bought more than some amount (let's say over $50). But this was in Turkey.
Also there's a website in Prague that has low shipping costs.

i'd hope that "scratch and dented" stuff would be available online also.

I've tried online grocery shopping in the past, since I can't drive. The price is reasonable (free delivery over a certain amount), but in my experience they get your order wrong nearly every time. And substitute the weirdest things, instead of what you actually asked for.

But if you're open to discovering interesting new foods, totally at random (canned Hearts of Palm, for example) - it's a great way to shop!

Oops, I'm gonna derail the thread.

Hearts of palm make a wonderful cold salad with artichoke hearts (and slivered garlic. In olive oil). Great summer salad.

And back on track: thanks for validating my concerns about how well this works in practice 8O

^ I was surprised, the Hearts of Palm were actually really good. (Wish I'd known about the salad recipe though!)

Think of it as an 'extreme cooking' challenge. Get creative with whatever they deliver, and make it work!

My girlfriend has found meat at the grocery store that was a month expired before.
