I'm posting a letter to my penpal. I'm not going to include her address but it's something like:

house number, street number
letter of city
letter of state
zip code which is all numbers
letter of country (USA)

mine is:
house number (my other house has a name)
street name which tells something about the area
name of city
name of county
postcode which is letters and numbers
letter of country (UK)

Don't Americans have street names which are more descriptive or ever have house names? Why not?

If you're not British or American, which is it more like in your country?

I'm jealous cos she can imagine my street better than I can imagine her street.

If in a suburban or urban area, we always go by street address, rather than “estate,” “close,” or whatever.

In rural areas, it’s usually something like “2345 Route so and so,” or something like “RD1, Box 600.”

If in an apartment building, we put the apartment number. We never put the name of the apartment building.

Zip codes are essential. A delay of at least 1 day ensues if you forget to put the zip code.

I live in a self-contained apartment in an urban area. It’s:

Name
Street Address
City, State, Zip Code

No apartment number because it’s self-contained.

You only put USA if it’s from another country.

Thanks for this :) I don't want to spy on her (I love how we have a somewhat deep, platonic friendship based mostly on ideas which goes beyond usual platonic friendships) but it's nice to know something about where she lives. So she lives in the suburbs?

Yes, postcodes and zip codes are essential in the 21st (or late 20th) century. I quite like that American ones are just numbers as it's different, but I wish I understood what they meant.

What does self-contained mean? When I was growing up it was 'garden flat, 4'.

A lot of American street names are chosen by real estate developers, who don't want to offend anyone and make their properties less desirable.

That's why a lot of our streets are named after plants, animals, terrain features, dead presidents, states, et cetera.

Lol this is a funny topic
In pakistan it is like that too i hate it
In saudi arabia thry have names the best was when they named a street after a man (black belt was v poor though) who rescued many ppl during Jeddah floods (there are videos of him diving in n saving ppl). Then he drowned so the street was named in his home country in pakistan n his family back home was gifted a ton of money plus scholarships as a thank u from the king
I thought that was adorable n heartwarmibg

In canada the street names are usually good eg Seabreeze drive which is where one of my homes was

I know some areas do things by region like ‘xyz region’ then numbers

REBECCA: I never told you about that letter Jane Crofut got from her minister when she was sick. He wrote Jane a letter and on the envelope the address was like this: It said: Jane Crofut; The Crofut Farm; Grover's Corners; Sutton County; New Hampshire; United States of America.

GEORGE: What's funny about that?

REBECCA: But listen, it's not finished: the United States of America; Continent of North America; Western Hemisphere; the Earth; the Solar System; the Universe; the Mind of God — that's what it said on the envelope.

GEORGE: What do you know!

REBECCA: And the postman brought it just the same.

Where I live live quite a few streets seem to be named after royalty. Prince street, King's road, Old King's road... at least it makes them easier to remember. :king:

American street addresses vary greatly across this country.

If you go to Lexington, Kentucky, the city has many streets with very unusual names. One of the main streets is called "Man O' War" street. Think about the name and what does it mean. Well the street is named after a racehorse called "Man O' War".

The crowning event of Man o' War's career came in a match race against the celebrated Canadian horse Sir Barton, the first winner of the Triple Crown. On October 12, 1920, he and Man o' War met in Windsor, Ontario. Man o' War won by seven lengths! In his career "Big Red" [his nickname[ won 20 of 21 races.

Man o' War was unquestionably the most famous Thoroughbred who ever lived.

Lexington is the heart of horse country. Many of their streets are named after great race horses. Man o' War was born on March 29 at the Kentucky Nursery Stud owned by August Belmont II. He was named by Mrs. Belmont, "My Man o' War"-since he was a war baby. Belmont was to serve in the Army in 1918, so he ordered his entire crop of yearlings sold at Saratoga.

Many of the street names in America, have bits of history wrapped into their naming.

Numbered streets are generally found in large cities. They are called numbers because it makes navigation fairly easy. So if you live on 22nd street north and want to go to 5th street south, you would generally travel 27 city blocks south.

Self-contained, in my case, my address covers my own apartment unit, and nothing else.

It would be redundant to insert an apartment number.

Zip Codes indicate areas of the United States.

Zip Codes starting with 100, 101, and 102 means “Manhattan, New York City.”

Mine starts with 114, which means “Jamaica.”

New York State Zip Code’s first 3 digits range from “100” to “149” (with very few exceptions).

Sounds just like any normal address to me.

Ours are like this:

Name
Street name, street number
Post code (4 numbers), city/town
country (Norway)

I've never seen any house names here, nor are apartment numbers typical to add.

My mailing address is a post office box. How boring is that?

But at least the postal codes are fun. Mine is "K0K 1H0". And Santa's is "H0H 0H0"!

Trying to get people from out of country to write to Trump and gripe about his policies, are we?
