I suffer from severe insomnia. When I feel calm, I get sleepy. Sweet smell does calm me down, especially flowers and ocean scent.

The problem is that my sense of smell is lousy. I can hardly smell anything unless the smell is really strong, something that would be overwhelming for most people.

Any suggestions for something with a very strong and soothing scent?

You could try something like lavender essential oil. You could try putting some on a 2X2 makeup pad and placing it near your pillow and face; that may give you a locally stronger concentration than a diffuser. It's common for an essential oil to smell really strong initially, then we become desensitized and don't smell it as much (if at all; I have almost no sense of smell); that doesn't necessarily mean that it has no effect.
There's a lot of different aspects to insomnia; Googling "sleep hygiene" will give you dozens of suggestions to try.
I hope this helps you.
