It sounds like it could be cramp. It often affects the calf muscle and often while you are asleep. The pain can be excruciating and if really bad you can feel it the next day. You need to get out of bed and get your weight on your foot and stamp around a bit. I used to get it really bad but seem to have grown out of it.
Yes, this. Once it's stretched out fully it'll stop cramping & hurting. You'll have to hold the stretch for sometimes minutes, not just seconds.
Also, if it is a cramp, the biochemical cause is usually a deficiency of potassium & electrolytes. As soon as your stretching allows you to, make your way to the kitchen for a half a banana (or some potatoes if you don't have bananas on hand - potatoes are also high in potassium) & a large pinch or two of salt and a glass of water. (or gatorade if you prefer) It works very quickly and then your leg won't likely cramp up and wake you again.
Same goes for exertion induced cramps from heavy exercise. My brother was fed 1/2 a banana, a packet of salt, and some water when his legs were cramping up on a 600km Cops for Cancer bicycle ride. They give us half bananas and water along the Tough Mudder course. I always stock up on a couple bunches of bananas for the week after the Touch Mudder - and I even take a salt shaker around with me to eat with them. It works.
