I moved into a 1 bedroom bungalow from a 1 bedroom flat last march and paid a couple of hundred pounds for gas and electric which I assumed was for the year, the other day I got a bill for £440 which was obscenely high I got my dad to call them up to clarify they are claiming that it is correct and that its from October that seems insane to me because I was spending much less in my old place and that was on a metre, nearly £2k a year seems a huge amount for someone who uses hardly any energy, do you think it must be a mistake?

There are lots of variables involved here.

Summer v Winter months
Type of heating systems
Providers - type of contract you are on
Double glazing
thermostats on the radiators etc etc
Flats have the benefit of being sandwiched between other flats ( better insulation )

Is your heating system the same as the flat , if not you might be misusing it - as crazy as it sounds my mums air flow ? heating needs to be kept on all the time for optimal economical performance , if I kept mine on all the time I'd be on the streets very quickly.

There is a slim chance that the meter readings could be wrong but this is rare.

Another thing , as you were on a meter in your old place were you in arrears ?

No I fully paid up on the old place, this is a terraced bungalow I put the heating for probably less than 45 mins a day on average.

Do you have a gas boiler ?
Which bill is higher , electricity or gas?
When was the boiler last serviced ?

Not sure my parents are calling them up in there house my dad was going to pay and I told him not too. My mum agrees with me her 3 bed house costs £70 for gas and electric and she has her heating on all the time, I think its just a mix up or something.

I'm not sure my parents handled it. I wouldn't be surprised that a business tactic is to intentionally overcharge people.

To my way of thinking, that's still a shedload of money for one month in a place such as you describe. I would try to get as much detail as possible (e.g. volume of gas consumed). Quite possibly something needs repair. If you're a renter, then it may be the landlord's fault, in which case you might want to seek legal advice.
