I heard about a job a friend is going to start training for in May. I know of the job & it's pay. I saw him post on FB last night that they're short staffed for the season and need more qualified people. I already have a job I can get full time hours at any moment I decide to again & can easily get other jobs.. but since I know how much this job pays and I have some very expensive goals to save up for, I asked him about the job posting.
6 month contract, 4 days on (4 off I think?) 12-15h/day, hourly pay is just a couple dollar above minimum wage with $2/hr bonus paid upon completion of the 6month contract.. but where the real money is in this is gratuities - and that's why people do it.
I'd potentially have to skip the Tough Mudder and a couple of weddings this Summer if I'm out of town working, and I'd have to delay returning to school at least part time until January - buuuuut, for the opportunity to make more money in 6 months than I make in a year, especially if I also find some work to do during the off days, I'd make the sacrifices.
Did a bit of quick research and asked someone who used to work for them in a different capacity and knows what the role is if they could see me in it based on Me and my work experiences and got a 100% yes, so, applying today and figure I'll let the powers that be in management decide if they want me on their team or not - if so, I'll do it.
Never worked out of town before.. and I've sort of been opposed because I LIKE being close by my good friends, but reality is, sometimes I only ever text with them for months and don't see them even every week or month, so being out of town 4 days at a time is Nothing.
Plus it truly would be one super cool experience of a job. IF I get a call and an offer, I'd be a server/host on a luxury train that takes very rich people on tours through the Rocky Mountains between BC and Alberta. It would probably be the most beautiful scenery I've seen to date in my life. (I've travelled it by highway many times, but never by train - it's way out of my budget/what I value.) The job would be half serving food/drinks, half story telling about BC and the towns & landmarks we pass by. I've done plenty of bartending/serving and can tell a story.. plus I absolutely LOVE this place & know I could convey that to tourists.
But in some ways I feel a bit under qualified for lack of very fine dining service experience.. but then again, I have served some weddings, and at a golf and country club etc.. and my friend that's already hired looks like a party animal rave kid - because he is, sooo..
Anyways, yeah, this is one of those ones where I'm like hmmmm.. not *quite* sure I can pull this off, but I'm gonna apply anyways because if they say "Yes sir, we'd be glad to have you on board our train!" then wtf? Why not? May as well dip out of my current job and go make twice as much money or more for half a year - especially since I can go right back to my current job any time I want to. Those are the perks of being in a union where you can just sign in and sign out.. others do it for travel/school/work contracts.. plus my father is the president of the local soooo.. slight bit of nepotism.
Still a bit of a what if they do hire me, though? Heh, well then, I guess I'd be all in and riding choocoos with rich folk for 6 months.

Well, just finished rewriting a resume & cover letter, went through and submitted the online application..
Besides a glowing resume & references, both professional and personal, I'd call me for an interview just for this one line in my cover letter:

Nice. Good luck!
I recently put a bit of humour into a cover letter. I ran the idea past a few people, as I'd never done it before, and got mixed responses...so I wasn't sure if I'd shot myself in the foot. But they hired me, so they must have either liked it or not minded it!

OOooooooOOooooh.. shortlisted for an interview, scheduled it for Tuesday afternoon.
Also just learned from my uncle that my grandfather worked in kitchen of the fine dining cars of the predecessor to VIA Rail in approximately 1948-1951 when my grandparents were first together before they were married. Kinda neat!
This is the first time I've applied for a job that I'm actually EXCITED about the possibility of getting! It's nothing I would have ever set out to do.. buuuuut, it would be a KILLER opportunity to see some unreal beautiful parts of BC/Alberta that I've never seen before - that you can only see by travelling these tracks. I'd otherwise never see them because tickets aren't cheap and it's not something I truly value enough to spend the money on, well, at this point in my life at least. Like.. tickets to ride this train are like $2500+ tax for a 5 day trip. Plus, apparently the staff are all super fun people, so that'd be dope.
But I'm not gonna lie. My primary motivation to shoot for this job is that it will pay me approximately 2-3 times what my current job pays for 6 months, plus I can still work on days off and make more money doing something else if I want to, which would mean I could REALLY bank some serious coin over 6 months if I don't slack off on all my days off. *IF* I get the job, that is.
One step closer, though! Only time will tell. If it's meant to be it's meant to be.*
*But I will still do everything in my power to make it happen if I can!

Just got a phone call from some admin person in their organization asking if I was still interested in the position.. 3 hours after they sent me an email asking me to select my own interview time, and half an hour or so after I had already done so. He hadn't noticed that I had in fact responded to that email already and was just calling to follow up.
Sounds like they likey likey my resume, cover letter, references & attitude and I'm HOPING that the feeling ends up being completely mutual.. I want this job, and they want to give it to me.
*shrug* A few online things to fill out and documents to get in order & then I should know sometime next week - especially since training starts at the beginning of May and they still need to hire a few qualified people who can commit for half a year. I'm sure there are plenty of University students who would love this as a Summer job, but they can't take it as the season extends into October. Too bad for them!
